Port Aransas in January?

We are from Michigan, and are considering spending January in our RV, in the Port Aransas area. We have never been there, and are wondering about the weather, the surroundings and activities. Having never done this, we're wondering if this would be a mistake. We enjoy the water, nature, history, and a "local" feel, not a generic place that could be interchangeable with anyplace else in the country. Any advice?

The weather in January can be quite nice....or it can be in the 40's with drizzle. Mostly nice, however. You might like

You should be pleased and find it much warmer that Michigan! Like the previous reply said, it can be cool and rainy or nice with sunny days. It does tend to be a bit windy. There are many activities all around for the winter escapees.

I would suggest staying in a place that has a heated pool and hot tubs as it makes it nice to warm up and enjoy the water. I know La Mirage has that and a fair sized group of winter Texans. The units on the south side have decks offering protection from the wind and nice sunny afternoons, so you can sit out read a book or whatever and enjoy the sun.

You may also want to look into South Padre Island. It's about 3 hours further south. Lots of snowbirds there also.

Here in South Texas, winter is my favorite time to get outside for hiking or any other outdoor non-water activity. Weather can be nice at any given time as far north as Austin. There are opportunities for lots of day or weekend trips if you are so inclined.

If that the plan, Port A/Corpus Christi is much more convenient that South Padre Island. Either way I think you'll enjoy South Texas in the winter.

Lots of "winter texans" come to port aransas for 2-3 months, and they all get together at various activities in town -- and Port A loves them....lots to do. The trolley goes out to Pioneer RV Park too, so if you dont have a car, the trolley will take you to town for a quarter. Port A is a very laid back town but still has alot of cool things to do. Weather is always a guess... you will have nice sunny days and you will have wet chilly days, but i am guessing better than buried under snow!

You will love Port A in the winter, however, the weather is very changeable...can be cold and windy one day maybe in the 40's - 50's and shorts weather the next day. So, you will want to take sweaters and a jacket as well as some lighter clothing for perhaps mid 60 - 70 deg. weather.

You will receive a warm "Winter Texan" welcome. Most places have a Winter Texan program with covered-dish dinners, game nights, dances, etc. (but not sure about RV parks.) Check out the popular Pioneer RV park on highway 361. Don't delay making reservations since there are hundreds of Winter Texans who come for the winter. You will definitely get a "local feel" and it's certainly not a "generic" place. You will meet lots of people from Michigan as well as people from all over the country.

You might check the Internet or call the Visitor Center at 1-800-452-6278 or 1-361-749-5919 and ask them to mail you an accommodations brochure.

A lot to see in the area, great little restaurants, wild life, a ferry to Aransas Pass which is fun to ride, Rockport is a great day trip,...you will want to stay two months the next time!

Port Aransas will be great in January---a little cool but not like the weather in your part of the country. We have stayed at several places in the area when we had a motor home and some as nice while others were getting a little worn. I have not been there in the motor home in three years so i can’t really give you a current update on that aspect. There are some nice restaurants around the area thus you will enjoy that. Also we went to that area to get away from the crowds found in South Padre. Too may students etc. in that area for us even when it is not spring break. On the other hand the weather will be a little warmer.Port Aransas is much calmer is if that is what you are looking for. Have a great trip.
