Please give us some itinerary ideas...

My wife & I are going to Benalmadena from November 5-20. We are staying in a 1 bedroom apartment. It is just going to be used as a base. We want to explore as we have never been to Europe before. It is our 10 year anniversary, and our first trip with no kids!

Looking for ideas, I am not against hopping a plane to go to the Canary Islands, I am also a train freak, and riding a bullet train is on my bucket list. I have toyed with going to Venice, also to the southern part of Portugal. My wife is not a real big beach girl, we do love old buildings and architecture, narrow streets, markets that type of thing. Like to immerse in the local culture as much as possible.

I have no idea about either taking the train to places, or the bus, or renting a car. We fly into Malaga and transfer to Benalmadena.

I know there are some very savvy travellers here, and really, really appreciate any tips or suggestions that I can look into. I have cruised past posts here, but there is just soooo much info my head is spinning.

Can I please know if it is better to book a rail pass in advance, or the car? Trying to be as stress free as we can, so really thinking driving might not be the way to go? I read the train is cheap, as is the bus.

We are going to spend the first couple of days in Benalmadena, then the doors open after that. Not sure about the weather either, any feedback on that? Places to stay away from? We live in Vancouver so as little rain as possible is a GOOD thing lol.

Thank you TA community in advance for all your help. I try to give back when I can with reviews.

First of all I would suggest that you not try to do too much in such a short time.

With regard to trains, I would take the train to Sevilla. It takes just under two hours from the Málaga Maria Zambrano train station. There is a lot to see in Sevilla and I usually stay two nights.

You could also take the train to Córdoba as a day trip or on the way to Sevilla. Under an hour to Córdoba and again to Sevilla.

With the high speed AVE train, Madrid is just about 2h 45min away. As a first time visitor you really need a couple of days to explore the city.

You can take the bus from Málaga to Granada to visit the Alhambra. This can be done as a day trip but I usually stay overnight. You should buy tickets to the Alhambra well in advance.

There is no need to rent a car. It is very easy to get around by bus and train.

There may be no need to hire a car but having one for some of your trip increases your flexibility and freedom and allows you to see places that relying on public transport makes arduous.

I would stick to Andalucia and maybe Madrid if that appeals. You could include Barcelona but that will likely involve a flight. There are so many places that meet your criteria its hard to know where to start but have a look at: Malaga, Cadiz, Ronda and the villages around Ronda, Seville, Granada, Cordoba, Estepona, Arcos - these are probably the most well known places to visit.

The Rough Guide to Andalucia is a very good read for the region. There are probably others but it is the one I use. It might be worth getting a copy, even a very cheap old addition would be worthwhile.

I’m going to get that book. I had no idea there is so much history in this area. Is this where a car would be a better option?

For me a car just provides more flexibility. For example, Ronda would be a good day trip from Benalmadena. I assume you could do it by public transport but if you wanted to add say, Grazalema to the trip, I think a car would be necessary.

I am there at that time also - so hoping for lovely sunny days. I would say to concentrate your time in a smaller area - it isn't a long time and it can be very tiring seeing places and you will need some rest days. Visit nearby Malaga - it is a lovely city and a day visit doesn't really do it justice but you can pack a few good things in. Do rickshaw tour that way you will be give lots of information whilst being taken around. Nearer the time ask for recommendations for places to eat but I would go to El Pimpi at lease for a glass of wine for the ambience.

A visit up to Benalmadena Pueblo will give you a idea of the white village atmosphere - there are others in the area but this is less commercialised and good for a "quiet" - local transport is ideal and going up for lunch and a wander on a nice sunny day is lovely.

You can visit other cities either by organised tours or using trains - Seville, Granada etc as mentioned above. You can also visit Gibralter very easily - the tour of the rock gives you the background history of its strategic location, We loved a visit to Nerja recently - a lovely low key resort which has retained it's historical centre.

You can fly to other areas from Malaga - if you are keen to do so I would check the winter schedule - Veuling fly to Barcelona as this is their hub. I hope you enjoy your holiday - but don't forget to relax and just enjoy the laid back vibe that is Spain

Thank you for all this great information. Do you know if it’s possible to cross at Gibraltar over to Morocco?
