Istria - 3 March to 10 March - what should we do??

We are flying to Pula in early March and have yet to make any specific plans. We're definitely the backpacker types and try and be somewhat spontaneous - but at least have accommodation sorted before heading out! We are on a budget - but we both typically enjoy anything that involves getting to know the local culture.

A couple of things have popped up to spark our interest - like Cres Island (though it seems it's hard to get to without a car... and car hires aren't cheap!). We're willing to travel around the country a bit - but would rather not be on 18 hour buses to Dubrovnik (so that's probably out!).

We would love any suggestions that those of you with a more in depth knowledge of the area might have.

You won't need reservations in March. Hotels are expensive in general. And if you want to know the local culture, you'll want to stay in private rooms which are very popular in Croatia.

Visit the tourist information places. They will help you find an apartment or room based on what you want.

You could also chose to fly to Dubrovnik from Pula, and work your way back up the coast either by air, ferry, car or bus (I think the Dubrovnik/Split bus is 11 hours). Croatia Air was pretty cheap. Check out ferry schedules at http://www.jadrolinija.hr

I would recommend not staying in Pula very long at all. Rovinj and Porec are very nice, and only an hour bus ride away.

Hey Piet and Kristie,

We were in Pula and the surrounding area back in April and had a great time. For things that you might enjoy, try the ferry right from Pula to Mali Losinj, go up the coast to Fazana and ferry out to Brijuni, a small island where Tito used to spend his summers which is now an animal preserve, or ferry from Fazana up to Rovinj and back. Or take a bus to Pazin, backpack down to Labin and bus back to Pula?

Ifyou can't find a nice sobe (in March you'd probably be their first guest of the year) then try the hotel Galija:

very affordable, and great location

I would agree on all except backpacking part.Although the route is scenic on Gracisce-Potpican section.

Car hires are not cheap but see if you can score a better deal on UK based budget (fly & drive) sites.

If you have some muscle power rent a bicycle.
