Driving to Istria from Trieste

We're visiting Central Istria in August 2012, flying in to Trieste.

Can anyone tell us what the drive is like, how much the tolls are, what currency they're payable in, etc?

Thanks.

For Slovenia you must buy a vignette (sticker) at the border. There is a gas station right there where you can buy it. It is 15E for 15 days if I remember correctly. The roads are good. We had no problem going from Venice to Pula, with a two or three hour stop in Rovinj, in one day.

According to this you can avoid the Slovenian roads that need the vignette.

Sticker is not the must... with many alternatives...easily searchable on this forum and on google almighty.15euros equals 10 liters of supermarket beer / 10 liters of premium petrol / 1 liter of premium olive oil / 2 grams of organic fair trade weed

If you are driving to Croatia and you want not to pay for the Slovenian motorway vignette, just follow these indications:

On the italian motorway follow the indication Fiume - Rijeka. You have to exit the motorway where you find the sign PADRICIANO - BASOVIZZA (you will see the sign Fiume-Rijeka as well).

Continue following these indications to the border place of PESEK, then continue on Slovenian normal roads to KOZINA (always follow Rijeka) and then you will reach the Slovenian/Croatian border at PASJAK, then in RUPA you can enter the Croatian motorway (the toll to Rijeka is about 1 euro).

Before arriving in Rijeka you can find the direction "tunnel Ucka" that takes you to central Istra and Pula.

@Kayak - Maybe you overlooked it but Midland Mark aims for central part. For that or any other part of Istria there are 7 other free scenic alternatives.Route over Rijeka does not sound like an sound option.

Actually, central Istria I thought was not the shore, but the mountain side.

I think Mark should specify exactly where in Istria he wants to go.

Thanks, everyone.

We're heading to Barban.

Are all the tolls payable in euros? Are they reasonably low amounts? We need to decide which currency we need and how much...

Ok, then if you follow my directions it's ok. When you are on the Croatian motorway, dirction Rijeka, you can decide either to follow direction Pula via Tunnel Ucka, or to follow the indications Opatija and then follow the coast road to Pula.

The first way is faster, the second is shorter.

The toll on the Croatian motorway is 1 Euro only. Very cheap. They accept euro and major credit cards. If you decide to take the way via tunnel Ucka, you have probably to pay another toll, but I think it's cheap too.

In Croatia many shops and restaurants accept credit cards and euro, however it's better you change some money into Croatian Kuna.

In Pasjak border point, just after the check point, you find a place where you can change. But you can change also in any Post Office, and it's normally more convenient than the border office.

Have a nice trip!

Just to be sure you understood: I said from Rupa you have to follow the motorway direction Rijeka, but actually you will not reach Rijeka: you will find the exit for Pula an Opatja before you reach Rijeka, OK?

So: Trieste - Padriciano - Basovizza - Pesek - Kozina - Pasjak - Rupa -Motorway - then follow Pula (mountain road) or Opatja (sea shore road). Before you reach Pula, you will find Barban.
