Where to stay in Houston??

Have finally booked our flights and are now looking for a hotel in Houston to stay for two or three nights before driving onto Austin and San Antonio. We would like to stay within walking distance of nice restaurants and bars - is the Galleria area the most suitable or Washington Street(?) Any Hotel recommendations would be great for each of these citys!

Thanks

Maureen

Galleria area is my suggestion. Several hotels/motels in the Galleria area. It really depends on what you are looking for in a hotel and how much you want to pay. Most all are nice and can range from a 21/2 star to 5 star.

No hotels on Washington Ave. Do recommend Galleria area. Very close to Washington, if you want to check out nightlife, restaurants there. The Houstonian isvery nice, and has a great spa. Hotel Derek is also nice. Welcome to Houston!

Yep, stay in the Galleria area. Washington Ave. is bars/clubbing, but not really hotels.

Where to stay really depends on what you're going to be doing. The Galleria area is still a good choice because of the number of nice hotels in the area as well as restaurants but to get the most out of a visit to Houston, you really need to be prepared to drive some.

As for suggestions for places to stay in San Antonio and Austin: In SA you want to stay ON the Riverwalk. There are any number of fantastic hotels there. One of the newest is the Grand Hyatt but we always stay at Palacio del Rio. There are also a number of boutique hotels on the river such as the historic O'Brien, Emily Morgan, Contessa or Menger.

In Austin we love the Driskill. It's historic and right in the heart of the action.

Hope you have a great trip.

Thanks for everyones replies! We will probably stay in the Galleria area as we are only staying in Houston two or three nights and then travelling onto Austin and San Antonio. I did wonder though if we are going to be staying in the Galleria area, do most hotels have car parks or would it be best if we picked up a hire car when we were ready to leave Houston rather than at the airport IAH when we arrive? Is there a charge at the hotels for parking?

Thanks again

Maureen

I replied to your other post, recommending that you look into The Woodlands area if you will have a rental car. It's a hidden gem on the Northwest side of town, and slightly quicker to get from the Airport. Though the Galleria is a very nice option.

Parking is free in a lot of hotels here, however if you stay in a very urban area and the hotel uses a parking garage or valet parking you might be charged a fee, you will have to ask if it is not listed on their website. I know Hotel AVIA in The Woodlands is very nice and in the middle of Market Street (shopping area) but still has free parking.

Hope you enjoy your stay in Houston and San Antonio.

A little hint for San Antonio, eat at Boudros on the River Walk and try their Prickly Pear Cactus Margarita. It is Amazing!

Most galleria area hotels do charge for parking. Still you are better off with a car as the taxi fares will easily exceed the rental car. Another option might be to go a little West from the Galleria to Westchase area. They usually have free parking and not that far from Galleria. Plus, when you are ready to go to SA - you are already on the West of Houston heading to SA (and don't have to worry about city traffic. I agree with the previous post about Boudros.

Sorry to give new suggestions after you had decided on Galleria (after most of us suggested it).
