Overnight layover IAH - single female

hi,

I have a layover in Houston, flight arriving at IAH at 12:40pm on April 1st and departing following morning. I will most likely be travelling on my own (single female).

Am not looking to do sightseeing such as museums etc but would love to be able to stroll, do some shopping enjoy a good meal at a friendly pub or restaurant....any suggestions?

I have not yet decided if I will book an airport hotel or downtown....

thanks for your help! :)

Dreamer--

Here's the problem: Staying at or very near the airport won't give you the ability to stroll or enjoy much of Houston's better restaurants, although the nearby town of Humble has some decent restaurants.

If you elect to go to Downtown Houston (roughly 20-25 miles away from IAH) to stay, you'll find virtually no shopping, as our Downtown is primarily a business district. Of course, you could always take a cab/Uber (or even a public bus, if worst came to worst) to an area with shopping. Downtown has a number of decent pubs (for lack of a better term) and Midtown (just south of Downtown) has many excellent restaurants. I'd suggest taking a cab or Uber, especially at night. Two of our favorites in Midtown are Reef (seafood) and Ibiza (Mediterranean influences, but general cuisine).

Thanks for replying :)...you mentioned restaurants in a couple of areas but is there an area where i can walk around, look through a few shops and enjoy a relaxed meal and do all that around the same area?

I love the Woodlands. It is 21 miles from Airport and Super Shuttle could get your there. However, there must be some hotels within the Woodlands that have free shuttles. (?)

Over 200 shops, restaurants and hotels and great for strolling and great restaurants from casual to upscale. The Hilton Garden Inn is lovely and right near all the action.

There are no hotels located in the Woodlands that have airport shuttles that I'm aware of. There are hotels which provide local shuttles for getting around the Woodlands shopping areas - although many hotels are located within walking distance of the mall. So, plan and budget to rent a car, use a shuttle, cab, or Uber.

I also vote for The Woodlands. You will feel completely safe on your own. In addition to The Woodlands Mall, check out Market Street and a large shopping center across the main road, which is just a short walk away. Tons of restaurants, shopping, movie theater, book store, etc. are all located here.

There are hotels here for all price ranges also. But don't know if any provide airport transportation. I'd figure about $45 taxi to get to a hotel up there.

Welcome to Houston!

Another area you might consider is The Galleria. It's considered "the" hub for upscale shopping in Houston. Cab/uber fare will be more expensive to get there--will be about $10-$12 more than to get to Downtown in each direction, but the area has not only great choices for shopping, but also great restaurants, all within a roughly 3/4 mile walk from Westheimer Rd. to San Felipe along Post Oak Blvd. Many good hotels in the area, as well. (Unfortunately, no shuttle service to/from IAH from Galleria area, as it's roughly 25 miles.) Just another idea...

The Woodlands is the place to be.Uber from the airport to Market Street is about $32.

Since you mentioned Pub. Gooses Acre is the new hotspot.

We like the Embassy Suites in the Woodlands. It is in an area with plenty of restaurants walking distance and a quick uber to the central area around the Woodlands Mall.
