Ideas for a self drive vacation from Dallas

Hi, We are visiting relatives in Dallas in October. We are a couple in our fifties and this will be our fifth trip to Texas. We would like ideas on places of interest to visit away from Dallas. We have been to San Antonio before but would be willing to go again.

We were thinking of a four or five day driving trip, maybe going to the Hill Country, Austin, San Antonio and back to Dallas.

Can anyone give us any ideas about where to stay and the best way to get there please.

We like scenic areas and small towns rather than big cities.

Once you determine you your destination city, you can use the following link to plan your route.

Texas Time Travel, presented by the Texas Historical Commission, is an excellent source for information regarding small towns in Texas. Click the link, then click the "state of Texas" region map. The red pins represent destination points of interests. http://texastimetravel.com/

in general, you could drive out of the southwestern directiion of Fort Worth..find Hwy 281 towards San Antonio

some small town Texas. Stephenville..possibly rodeo, home cooking

on 281 is Marble Falls TX...small town, typical main street America, infamous Blue Bonnet Cafe..some shopping

head farther on 281 to Johnson City...a nice little stop off....lots of President LBJ history in the area

then head east on 290 to get you to FREDS. on the way is LBJ National Park

tpwd.state.tx.us/state-parks/lyndon-b-johnson

then the famous Luckenbach (TX) Dance Hall..worth finding, musicians show up for impromtu sessions

there is also Bandera TX..cowboy capital of the world

near Fredricksburg is Enchanted Rock

tpwd.state.tx.us/state-parks/enchanted-rock

depending on your decision..you have the possiblity to eat at 1 of these 3 BBQ joints

Luling (Austin)

Driftwood (Austin)

Llano (40 miles from Fredricksburg)

I enjoy the drive near Kerrville and Hunt TX (replica of Stonehinge,Easter Island)

You could manage these two state parks in one day, they are in close proximity..Garner State Park and Lost Maples

www.tpwd.state.tx.us/state-parks/garner (Old Garner part has shelters w/electirciy for overnight stay)

**your one day-your original admission price covers the admission to a second state park in the same day

Thanks for all the information. We have a lot to look at. We are from UK and visiting relatives in Plano. We just want to get away from Dallas for 4 or 5 days to explore the more scenic areas within relatively short driving distances( by American standards) We also need to return to DFW for return flight home.

Since you posted this in the Fredericksburg forum, I'll add that Fredericksburg would actually be a great choice for a four or five day trip. Lots to do in and around the town, and you could make it a base for exploring other parts of the Hill Country. October is a lovely time in this part of the state!

Thank you. I really appreciate your advice as that was the way I was thinking. Its nice to get the views of people who have already been there, Do you have any recommendations for places to visit in the area? I have a few ideas from others on the forum.

Places to consider near Fredericksburg: Boerne, Luckenbach, and Wimberley are my favorites. Drives to each from there would be relatively easy and somewhat scenic. There are also lots of wineries - http://www.texaswinetrail.com/ - in this area and a wonderful distillery you can visit - http://www.garrisonbros.com/ - in Hye, which is just east of Fredericksburg.

Living in Fredericksburg, I'd like to add my two pennies worth of advice. We host many people from Europe and Australia and after asking them their opinions, here are the results: Without a doubt, every single person who has stayed with us has expressed the wish that they had based on Fredericksburg because it is so much easier not to move place to place, yet within an hour or so drive, there is so much to see!

Stay in or around Fredericksburg area because it is a good base for driving an hour or so in any direction to see a variety of points of interest. While in Fredericksburg, go to Enchanted Rock, Luckenbach, the Wildseed Farms, and either the National Museum of the Pacific War or the LBJ State and National Park areas. In October, you must take the drive to the Garner State Park and the Lost Maples parks, it will be beautiful, and the drive is exceptional for scenery. Drive one day to Austin and visit the State Capital, eat at Saltgrass, and take in the unique shops downtown area. Drive one day through Boerne to San Antonio and take in the riverwalk, the Alamo, and tour the historic areas (they offer a tour of the Spanish missions that is very good!). Take a drive through Johnson City to Marble Falls, dine on the water and proceed on to Kingsland and through Burnett to the many lakes there. If possible, book an evening ride on the paddleboat cruise to the Canyon of the Eagles - it's a wonderful opportunity to view the sunset off the cliffs and the wildlife from the perspective of the water! If you have more time, drive to historic Mason which is a quaint western town, and eat some good Mexican food while there, or to Bandera which is the Cowboy Capital of Texas. And you MUST make time for some exceptional Texas Music while here, and if you are an art aficionado, we have nationally recognized galleries, and of course, the 37+ wineries and 95+ Restaurants....
