Fort Worth stay- advice needed

Hi there,

I am planning a trip to Texas from Ireland in March 2014, so am in research mode at the moment. The plan was to spend two nights (Fri/Sat) in the Stockyards, and then move to a hotel in Sundance Square for three nights (Sun - Weds) before flying home. (We will already have spent time in Houston, San Antonio and Austin before this)

My query is; when researching the Hyatt Place Stockyards, the price to stay the Friday and Saturday nights is 274 USD/night, but if we were to stay there the 5 nights instead of moving into Sundance square, its only 180 USD/night, so I wonder has anyone any views to answer the following...

1. Would the Stockyards be much quieter on weekdays?

2. Is Sundance square worth staying in. We would like to go there for an evening or two but as we like our few drinks we would not be driving, which would mean taxis back to the Stockyards.

3. Is 5 nights just too long to stay in the one spot in Stockyards.

Thanks everyone,

There is a tourist Molly the Trolley that will shuttle you to Sundance Square and back and also to the art museum district:

Answer to question is 5 nights to long? I was just curious how many days you devoted to my favorite Texas tourist city of San Antonio? I personally would not devote 5 days to Ft. Worth, especially if you only devoted a couple of days to San Antonio. Just my 2 cents!

Molly's shuttle to/from the Stockyards/downtown FW was a good suggestion, but "she" has been replaced by The-T's bus Route 15 Stockyard Station Trolly - it only operates on Saturday and depending on travel direction, shuts down between 9:30 and 10:00 pm. Not really a viable option if you're planning an evening's entertainment. (Neither route includes the Cultural District, but there are other bus routes which do)

That said, if your days "here" include Sat, I'd opt for lodging in Sundance Square and use Route 15 as a means to enjoy an afternoon and early evening at the Stockyards before returning to Sundance Square for later night entertainment. Then.... as you mentioned, you could always hail a cab if you miss the last bus. http://www.the-t.com/Portals/0/docs/15sat.pdf

Have you considered a few nights in Dallas? The **Trinity Rail Express commuter rail connects FW and Dallas' downtowns (approx 30 miles). Once in Dallas, DART's light rail and the McKinney Av Trolly give you options to restaurants, entertainment, the art's district, shopping, etc. **NOTE - The TRE does NOT operate on Sunday nor past 10pm on any night. If Dallas is an option for you, I'd post a separate question in the Dallas forum.

OOps! Tks Karin for info on Molly. That's what I get for being in a hurry.

Yes, Elaine. I agree 100% with Karin. Stay in Sundance Square and enjoy all it has to offer and use Molly the Trolley to get you to the beautiful art museums and other attractions. I walked 4 blocks over from art museums to the Cowgirl Museum in March and I loved it. Lots of good places to eat around the museums and in the art museums too.

Here is map for Molly:

Here is info on Trinity Rail Express train to Dallas that picks up at Sundance Square and drops you off right downtown. Just don't miss the last train back to Ft. Worth!

Thanks so much for all your help, it's greatly appreciated... I think I will stick with the two nights in Stockyards and then venture into Sundance Square for a few nights to take in the attractions there.

I did consider staying in Dallas but don't really want to be hopping places more than I need to; and don't worry Georgetowngal, I am staying 4 nights in San Antonio too😃

I don't know your age but just west of downtown is the West 7th development/Cultural district. It is a very new area and great if you are a young adult. Lots of new resturants and fun. The Museum Area is very near(think 2 blocks) and has great places. Two of the Art Museums have great resturants inside for lunch.

They have just started a new bicycle exchange program. I have not done it(I am old) but my young adult children would love it. You can check out a bicycle in one spot and ride to another area and check it in. Another neat new area with funky new resturants and bars is the Magnolia street area. Cabs are fairly reasonable and Texas is just not a "public transportation" friendly as your part of the world. Thank goodness you are coming in March so you can walk around some. Summers are beastly for people not used to the heat.

You will love Fort Worth...be sure and check the area calendar. there might be an event you would miss.
