Best home shopping for locals

I'm coming back to Texas in August. I'll be spending a few days in each of Dallas, Austin and San Antonio in early August.

I want to buy some furniture and homewares that are Texan. Obviously I can't buy anything too big or heavy, but I'm thinking a nice wall star, cushions or throws, paintings or posters etc.

I did see some nice things during my last visit at a shop at the DFW Stockyards but the prices were obviously for tourists ;) I'm travelling on a tight budget so was hoping some locals could point me to other places I can shop. I'll have a rental car so can get around fairly easily.

Thanks in advance. :)

Gruene, TX will have some of the things you're looking for.

In Austin there's Wild About Music- Music Gifts, Music Art www.wildaboutmusic.com; Yard Dog features Texas (and other) folk artists www.yarddog.com/‎ We also love Uncommon Objects www.uncommonobjects.com The last two are both on South Congress - there are several other stores with similar stuff on SoCo also.

when might you be visiting?...check here for Market Trade Days in various cities

texashighways.com -search by region and month..search closer to your visit for more dates.

...for ex.

Austin/SA areas

AUG 3-Wimberly Trade Days (a nice outdoor experience) http://www.shopmarketdays.com/

AUG 17/18 Trade Days-Fredricksburg TX

AUG 17/18 Trade Days-Gruene TX

AUG 10-San Marcos-http://www.toursanmarcos.com/events/arts/art-unhitched.html

AUG 2 Fredricksburg-First Friday Art Walk

AUG 10 Boerne-Second SAT Art and Wine

AUG 10 Bastrop (Austin area) Pine Street Market Days

Dallas Area

AUG 1-4 Canton Trade Days (outside of Dallas)

http://firstmondaycanton.com/market-dates/

AUG 16-18 McKinney Texas...Third Monday Maret Days http://www.tmtd.com/

AUG 10-11 Trade Days Waxachie TX

---------

I might suggest driving the lesser road Highwy 281 in/out of southwest of Fort Worth to San Antonio and then you can make the triangle and utilize I 35 to/from SA and Austin area to/from Dallas area.

By driving 281 to get to San Antonio, you can find unique shops in the smaller towns on your way...usually road side places. More notable is Marble Falls for shopping and a quintessential Texas/American main street.

http://www.historicmainstreet.org/

Stop at Bluebonnet Cafe as well in Marble Falls...Texas home cookin', mile high pies. circa 1929

http://www.bluebonnetcafe.net/

22 miles south of Marble Falls..Johnson City is a nice small town to meander in..on 281 go to the main intersection/traffic light and turn west on Hwy 290 and that small stretch is downtown and the court house nearby

in between San Antonio, as mentioned is Gruene Texas...As well, there is Wimberly Texas for ex. http://www.rusticdesignimports.com/index.html

A stop in the main square in San Marcos might yield some antique shopping as well.

across from San Marcos outlet mall is this mixture of restaurant/shopping and bakery Centerpoint Station

http://www.centerpointstation.com/

Boerne TX and Fredricksburg TX antique shopping is quaint and nice older main stretes however, the prices are higher..

also, there is Salado Texas that is known for its shopping...off I-35 north of Austin/Georgetown

http://www.salado.com/shop.cfm

in Austin, a lot of kitchy shops...for ex. the shop Junk Gypsy

gypsyville.com/home-goods.html?___SID=U

Happy shopping

Grapevine's Main Street has a number of shops that handle TX memorabilia & some of the items you may be looking for. There are several wine tasting rooms featuring TX wines and accessories. Kiss It Good Buy is on the less frequented part of Main Street (north of NW Hwy, Business 114). They feature home furnishings on consignment, so no guarantees of inventory. G'VINE is neighbors DFW to the north. Don't know if I'd drive far out of your way, but if you're staying near-by....

McKinney (faaaaar north Dallas) also has shops that may have something to interest you.

There is a place called DeRidder in Forney along Hwy 80. Lots of TX decor. They have 2 warehouses - be sure to go in the one in the back as well.

Tight budget? Got your two answers.

1st answer is Garden Ridge Pottery. Located in Austin, San Antonio and Dallas.

http://www.gardenridge.com

Garden Ridge is a megastore retailer that offers decorating items for more than just the garden. Considered the “home décor depot,” Garden Ridge stores sell about 500,000 decorating items such as seasonal décor, framed art, baskets, silk and dried flowers and arrangements, furniture, home textiles, and pottery, as well as crafts and party supplies.

Because this is a big nationwide chain their prices are very, very, very low. They have tons of metal wall decor, pots, prints, sofa pillows, accessories etc. This is where you need to go and not drive all over those big cities. Plus, if you go to a Southwest Decor retailer you are paying high rent district prices.

Lastly, this big flea market is only in San Antonio and Grand Prarie (Dallas area). It is Traders Village

tradersvillage.com/san-antonio/shopping

tradersvillage.com/grand-prairie/rv-park

Go to Google Images and in the search box put:

Garden Ridge Pottery and you'll see inside of some of the stores

Type in Traders Village and you see them

Have fun!

Wow, thanks so much. I'm getting really excited now. I can't wait to check out the places you have also suggested.

I'll be in Austin on 10 Aug, so will hit the Bastrop Pine Street Market Day. Then I'll head out of Austin on Sun 11 Aug to try and get to the SAT flea market because that looks fantastic. As suggested, I'll take the 281 because it sounds like a great drive. I did the direct I-35 DFW to SAT with a stop at San Marcos last time so this will be a great way to change things up. (Now I need to see how many other of the suggestions I can fit in :))

...forgot to mention Stephenville/Granbury--the area outside of Fort Worth..potentially on one of your routes

I don't mean to be negative, but I used to live in Bastrop and I have been to about 20 Market Days and never opened my wallet. It is just a nice group of tents on Main Street and a side street selling jewelry, knitted baby clothes, purses, clothes, soap, jelly, aprons and country crafts. It's a very small venue. A lot of people just visit to enjoy the weekend out and about and have a nice lunch in one of the nearby restaurants.

It's 70 mile round trip from Austin and I feel if you are on a mission for specific items that this would not be the place to visit. However, that is just the opinion of one person.

Yes, pls take a look around downtown San Marcos and it's neighboring town of New Braunsfel. They have some nice shops there.

Also, in Schertz you will find a better flea market choice than the Austin one. It is called Bussey's

http://busseysfm.com

Up IH35 about a mile to the north of Bussey's is a huge Garden Ridge Pottery which I mentioned above.
