Deep Ellum is the exact opposite of "don't party a lot' and "have children" - especially at night.

It's a neighborhood east of downtown full of nightclubs, music venues, restaurants and bars.

What are you looking for specifically?

Deep Ellum is about as edgy and off-beat as you can get in Dallas. Unless you are going there to eat during the day, I can't imagine taking kids there. If you look up Deep Ellum on the web, there are several good sites that describe the wide variety of places to go. Everything from established restuarants and clubs to little dive bar, grungy places. Lots of folks swear by Deep Ellum; others just swear AT Deep Ellum! But don't be scared of the reputation- just be aware that this is not a spick and span, squeaky clean kind of area. It started off with clubs in warehouses and many places are still that way. There's a good article in today's Dallas Morning News about Club Clearview's 20th anniversary.

DO NOT TAKE KIDS TO DEEP ELLUM!!! I got here maybe once every tow months usually to see a friends band play. If you go be sure to have a few friends with you just to be safe..

That is a tuffy. I am trying to think on this one. Maybe The Stockyards in Ft. Worth? Maybe even Billy Bob's for a quick look around. 8 months is both a good age and a difficult one. But don't give up! Museums are good for quick visits and the Kimball is wonderful.

The Gaylord Resort in Grapevine might be good.

Depending on your budget, if you stayed at the Worthington in downtown Fort Worth, there is plenty to do, see and eat right there in Sundance Square. There is also a Courtyard by Marriott downtown that, I think, has a pool. I just realized that my Stockyards idea might not be so good for July 4 weekend- Willie's Picnic is down there on the 4th and there are other big things going on.

Good thinking, ntx2. Now that I am thinking about Grapevine, it might be the perfect place. If the Gaylord is too pricey, there are several nice hotels near the Grapevine Outlet Mall- Embassey Suites, Sheraton, Hilton- and smaller chains. You could get a hotel with a pool, be near a good shoppping place, wander into Grapevine for the still smalltown feel of downtown (or into SOuthlake to check out Town Square), good non-chain restaurants in downtown Grapevine as well all the chain restaurants you could hope for both around town and near the mall, plus probably fireworks close by.
