East Nashville - safe areas?

We are considering booking accommodations through Airbnb or VRBO for our upcoming trip to Nashville & it looks like there are quite a few places in East Nashville that look nice but am wondering if there are certain streets or areas of East Nashville that aren't so safe? We will have a car. It looks like some of the listings reference areas within East Nashville (e.g, Shelby park, Lockewood, Five points). How does this area compare to the 12 South area in terms of shops, cafés, bars & safety? Thanks.

We will be in Nashville for 1 night in July on the way to DC. We are going to an Opry show. You think we are safe to be in one of the hotels with in a mile or so of there? We won't be walking around much but I don't need our windows busted out in the parking lot. Thanks so much!

If you're on the east side of the Cumberland River you should be fine. If you're on the west, let us know the hotel name and someone will give you some thoughts on the relative safety of the area. Keep in mind, East Nashville is not a slum in the early stages of gentrification - its revitalization has been going on for many years. Large neighborhoods of the area are full of young professionals, a fair share hipsters and families.

I am looking at getting an Airbnb for a large group of friends next weekend. We are possibly looking at a house on N 2nd and Grace St. The house is new but I am not sure about the area. Mostly just care if it is safe because we will most likely uber everywhere we go.

Thanks

I wouldn't be too keen on staying there. If you go to the nifty crime map I posted a few pages back on this thread, in the last week alone there have been 3 reported assaults, 4 reported burglaries and one reported drug violation within a 3 block radius of that intersection. There's subsidized housing about 2 blocks south that account for most of these crimes, but 2 of the assaults were reported right at the intersection of 2nd and Grace.

Thats what I was worried about. It looks like a brand new house put right in the middle of a not so nice area. Thanks for your response

We are staying on the river on 1st Ave. N near Stockyard. Location chosen due to reviews on the great location, but it looks like not a great area based on info in this thread. Should we make a point to drive everywhere even during the day instead of walking as we'd originally planned? (I know this area isn't in East Nashville, but didn't want to start a new thread)

Thanks to some helpful older posts, I was able to get answers to my question above. We likely won't walk at night and since I have a designated driver, this isn't a problem. Will just budget to pay for parking more than we'd planned.

Yeah, daytime will be fine. Most of the walk even at night is OK too, but you do have a few blocks where there will be very little foot or vehicle traffic. If I was by myself, I'd drive or get an Uber/Lyft/taxi. If I was in a group of 4 or so, I'd walk it well into the evening. At 1am, probably not.

Thanks for the tip! We're older and likely won't be out too late, but we'll be more comfortable driving at night. I'm glad we can walk to a few things during the day because the parking there seems as bad, or worse, than in Atlanta (in terms of costs). It's just the two of us and since my husband doesn't drink, we're happy to drive when needed.

I'm not sure where you got that perspective from, but IMO, Nashville has some of the most reasonable parking rates for a city of its size and the lots and garages are plentiful. Check out http://www.parkitdowntown.com for an interactive map of all parking options.
