Things to see / do around Alabama

We are visiting a friend next year who has just moved to Alabama. We would like some advice as to what are the best places to visit in this part of the US. Not been to America at all before but otherwise very well travelled. We like culture, art, music and the "great outdoors". We would like to travel around by train.

You will probably get more responses if you post this on an Alabama forum. Nashville is in the state of Tenneseee which is north of Alabama. Some of the larger cities in Alabama are Huntsville, Birmingham, Montgomery and Mobile. You could post to Alabama or even better would be to narrow it down to a city that your friends live close to.

Unfortunately, I think your travels will be limited if you want to travel by train. I would suggest renting a car so you can go where ever you want.

In Alabama, depending on the time of year you will be visiting, the beaches along the gulf coast (Gulf Shores, Orange Beach) are very popular in the summer and they are gorgeous beaches with sugar white sand.

I'm from Alabama (west central part of the state) so here's an advance welcome to Alabama!

Forget about travelling by train in the South. Just not a good idea. Rent a car or you'll be wasting too much time (and will be so limited in what you can visit) that it won't be worth your time).

Also, keep in mind interstate travel is expected here in the States, so don't limit yourself to Alabama. Though there's some stuff to see there.

Alabama is a beautiful state and there are more than just "some" things to see. Orange Beach and Gulf Shores have some of the best white sand around. The gulf coast is open and ready for business after last year's horrible oil spill.

The Birmingham area has the Civil Rights Museum, Vulcan Park, the Zoo and the Botanical Gardens. There's also Oak Mtn State Park just south of the city. If you are in town during the summer the minor league Birmingham Barons Baseball team play at Regions Park in Hoover.

In the west Alabama city of Tuscaloosa you have the University of Alabama that can be neat to tour, although I personally prefer the eastern Alabama campus of Auburn University. ;) While in Tuscaloosa a river cruise on the Bama Belle can be a fun way to spend the evening.

There's also the Huntsville Space and Rocket Center, Little River Canyon in NE Alabama, Ivy Green in Tuscumbia, AL which is the childhood home of Helen Keller.

Here's a link to a website with lots of ideas on ways to have a fun while visiting "Alabama the Beautiful"
