You definitely can NOT walk from Beale Street to Overton Square. However, the trolley apparently travels between downtown and Overton Square (we've never taken that route), but it'd be the best solution for you.

No, the trolley does not go to Overton Square. It stops about a mile away. It's a cab ride for sure. It is not walkable from downtown, and not from where the trolley ends either.

Is it just to Far say maybe 5 miles or just unsafe for a group of about 6?

It's just not walkable to go from downtown to Overton Sq. I don't really know how to explain it. Yes you'd be walking through some undesirable areas. you'd have to cross over the interstate. and you'd be walking down a major road with minimal sidewalks. Gven the heat and humidity, the hills, bus exhaust....it's just not walkable. No one else other than bums and shady people would be out there walking with you. Memphis is not a walking city; people do not walk places here.

Even from the end of the trolly...the last trolley station is at Madison and Cleveland. Overton is Madison and Cooper. It's a good ways away. Its doable, but who wants to sweat and hike it miles down a road just to go eat and drink? Cabs are very cheap here. Especially in a large group, it would be VERY apparent you are tourists and that would attract a lot of sketchy people.

It's not that you can't walk here -- we do have sidewalks! ;-), but it is about 4 miles. Also, unless there's a reason you specifically want to go to Overton Square (say, a particular restaurant), you might want to try the Cooper-Young neighborhood instead.

As most people have noted, you want to use the same type of caution in Memphis that you would in any other urban area. That said, walking from Beale street to Overton Square would not really take you through the kind of neighborhood where you're taking your lives in your hands, more just Ugly Urban, lots of traffic and not much that's attractive.

One more thought that just occurred to me: Rather than heading to O. Square from Beale St., head south (walking!) and check out the South Main district. Even just a couple of years ago it was pretty rough, but they have been doing some major revitalization, lots of small art galleries etc. They have a website at www.southmainmemphis.org which might give you some idea of whether there'd be stuff there you want to see.

If you are in town on a last Friday of the month, IF they are still doing it, they have the South Main Trolley Tour where the galleries and shops stay open in the evenings. Otherwise though, there isn't much to the south main area. it's growing, but there are only a few restaurants and a few specialty type stores, along with the galleries. not really the excitement you would find downtown on beale, or the crowds you'd find in bars and restaurants in Cooper Young.
