Road trip

Hi

Leaving Memphis tomorrow with nowhere booked so we can go wherever. We have booked into accom in clarksdale on Thursday night so we have Tuesday and Wednesday with no plans. We were thinking of going to oxford tomorrow and maybe staying over.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Maybe go via hollysprings and Sardis lake (can you swim here??) enroute to oxford?

I'll post in MS forum also. Thanks

I'd agree with Oxford and Holly Springs. Holly Springs has some lovely old antebellum homes you can tour, but some of them require an appointment. You can Google Holly Springs to get info on that. You might also Google Graceland Too in Holly Springs if you're an Elvis fan.

May I make another travel suggestion? You could travel to Arkansas instead, checking out Little Rock, Hot Springs (a city and a national park) and go digging for diamonds at Crater of Diamonds State Park. You could then cross the river at Helena when heading to Clarksdale.

You can swim at Sardis, but its too cold for that this time of the year. In fact, its supposed to go down into the 30's the next couple of nights.

One more suggestion. If you decide to go the MS route and if you like gambling, you might consider one night in Tunica, MS, about an hour north of Clarksdale. There are nine casinos there, all with hotels and a pretty neat river musuem.

The casinos feature Vegas style gambling, including free drinks while you gamble. Normally you can get hotel rooms at very reasonable prices on week nights. I would skip staying at Harrahs as they are closing in a couple of months and I've read that maintenance on the property hasn't been done properly for some time. The hotels we like are Gold Strike, Hollywood, Horseshoe and Sams. Harrahs, Fitz, Gold Strike and Hollywood all have indoor pools for your swimming request. Hollywood's indoor pool is especially nice and large, with an attached outdoor sundeck. Harrahs indoor pool isn't much larger than your bath tub.

Again for your swimming request, you'll find most cities have at least some hotels have indoor pools available for year round use. For example, Hot Springs has a La Quinta, Comfort Inn, Staybridge and others with indoor pools. Most places in this part of the US don't open outdoor pools until Memorial Day weekend at the end of May.

One more bit of advice. At least here in the US, you will pay the most for a hotel by walking up to the desk and asking for a room that night. You'd do better on rates even by booking from your phone in the parking lot, where you could access online rates that are often discounted.
