Two months is a long time to spend in Memphis. Are you planning to road trip a little and see some other places in the south or do you plan to spend every night in Memphis?

There are some small towns close enough to Memphis for a day trip. I'd suggest Holly Springs, MS for their beautiful antebellum homes, Oxford, MS for its historical ties to Faulkner, Ole Miss and their wonderful town square, Shiloh, TN for the Civil War battlefield there, Tupelo, MS for Elvis's birthplace, Henning, TN to see Alex Haley's home, Clarksdale, MS for their classic juke joints and many more.

Many American villages near large cities are frequently suburbs or bedroom communities which are merely in the path of outward growth from the cities. Some still retain their original footprint and character in their core like Collierville, near Memphis and Franklin near Nashville. Collierville has the old town square which now contains antique shops and cafes and sits near the railroad which helped the town grow over the last 150 years, displaying passenger and dining cars on the sidetracks from a bygone era. Other local towns like Moscow and Somerville have central squares as well, also some old southern mansions, but are less quaint and offering less to do for the visitor. There's a very small town located 20+ miles north of Memphis named Braden Station whose center has a large red brick 120 year old general store and railroad station and looking very much like it must have in the 1800's. The old store houses a Seafood restaurant known for its Catfish buffet three nights a week. The trip from I-40 to Braden Station takes you through some farms and cattle pastures to help set your mood for dinner. Welcome to Tennessee!

Assuming that Elvis is a main interest in bringing you to the area, I'd second Tupelo, You can visit the house Elvis was born in

East Tupelo will fit your bill perfectly, it's a typical southern town.

You're so welcome,

I should have also mentioned that you could check out Dyess, AR, where you can tour Johnny Cash's birthplace. You'll find an abundance of small towns all over the US still have town squares, interesting old homes, etc.

Hernando MS is 20 minutes south on HWY55 (exit 240). Have lunch at Cafe 51 (yummy homemade southern food). Velvet Cream has a great menu from burgers to salads and they are known for their huge variety of icecream and milkshakes (note - this is not a restaurant, you take the food to go or eat in the car). Ladybug bakery (exit 240, commerce street in hernando ms) is a great place to stop for breakfast maybe on your way to Oxford. They are not open Sunday or Monday and also serve a small lunch.

Head south on 55 about 30 more minutes to Como MS and eat dinner at Como Steakhouse. Order the filet, it is delicious!!!!! Great prices and the atmosphere is wonderful.

In Southaven MS (just 10 miles south of Memphis on Rt55) there is a sushi restaurant we love called Haru. Everything is good there. There is also a great pizza place called Lost Pizza.

Hope this helps add to your planning.
