Advice for Memphis / Nashville Trip

I, and two buddies are going there at the end of October. Staying in the Heartbreak Hotel for 3 nights and doing the VIP in Graceland. We arrive on a Sat night so have Sun and Monday and part of Tues to do the sights. What would you recommend, Elvis and otherwise? I am the fan, the other two just want a good holiday! We are then going to head to Nashville on the Tuesday by car but want to stay someplace Tuesday night which will give us a good sense of that part of the world - would you recommend a driving route? Finally, any ideas for Wed/Thurs/Fri/ in Nashville or any other suggestions? Thanks

Since you'll be staying right there at Graceland, be sure to take advantage of the free early morning grave walk up time. Its the only time you can actually walk up the driveway of Graceland.

There's a free shuttle from downtown to Graceland to Sun Studios, but you must take the studio tour to use it. It doesn't run 24/7, so check the schedule so you don't get stuck downtown. Also, for a nominal fee, HH runs a shuttle to Beale St. downtown. This would definitely be advantageous if you plan to drink downtown. Again, I don't believe it runs 24/7, so you might have to use a cab for the return trip if it gets very, very late. There's also a shuttle bus service, the Hop Bus, that stops at various attractions throughout the day.

Other things you might all enjoy would include our amazing zoo, Rock and Soul Museum, Stax, Elmwood Cemetery, National Civil Rights Museum, Mud Island, a drink and a peek at the ducks at the Peabody or maybe an organized tour like Backbeat's Mojo or ghost tour or the downtown segway tour. The Memphis Grizzlies will be playing some pre-season games next month if the dates happen to coincide with yours. Y'all might enjoy a trip down to Tunica, MS to make a "donation" at one of the many casinos or a drive across the river to West Memphis, AR for an evening at the greyhound track.

Are you saying you might spend the night somewhere between Memphis and Nashville? If so, I wouldn't bother. Jackson, TN is the only town of any size between the two cities and there's not much there as far as tourist attractions. You could stop at Casey Jones Village there for lunch on the way to Nashville. Spend an extra night in either Memphis or Nashville instead.

As for driving to Nashville, its a straight shot up Interstate 40 the whole way and only takes about 3 hours.

As for things to do in Nashville, your best bet would be to ask this on the Nashville forum. Some of our favorites in the Nashville area are the Jack Daniels distillery a couple of hours from the city, the Parthenon, a peek at the Opryland Hotel, great live music every evening and dinner at Monell's.

You might spend that extra night in Memphis splitting four days between HH and a Downtown hotel so that you will be oriented among walkable attractions the second half of your trip. Your friends might appreciate a little more freedom to move about in their lodging area to access restaurants, music oriented museums and attractions as well as Beale St. Sunsets from Downtown hotel rooftops are memorable, in fact you don't have to be a guest at the Peabody to go up to the rooftop where the Duck Palace is located and view the majestic Mississippi River sunset across the Delta, or the Madison Hotel's outdoor lounge atop the 20 story structure on the river while having a drink, or the Marriott Residence Inn's rooftop open to hotel guests with comp. beverages available.

I'd do Backbeat Tours' Memphis Mojo bus tour or the Peabody Hotel's Historian's Tour on Sunday or Monday when crowds are smaller. Check out the Band Box at Blues City Cafe on Beale on Monday when they usually have more of an early RocknRoll orientation to contrast the Blues up and down Beale. Check out the Center For Southern Folkore on Main and The Belz Oriental and Judaic Arts Museum for a change of pace to see a very large collection of oriental jade maasterpieces.
