Romantic Weekend Getaway

We are heading down to Memphis in June for a long weekend and are hoping for some pointers on things to do that are not necessarily the norm. We don't have interest in any Elvis tours, etc. (I know, I know)... We love great food so any non-touristy locations would be great to hear about too. We are staying in the entertainment district. Thanks in advance!

Hey!

Here are some non Elvisy escape nooks and local spots:

Bluff City Coffee on South Main right on the trolley line. I have made friends and met music moguls, an NBA star, and veteran politicians popping in for coffee here in the mornings.

Miss Cordelia's Grocery. Located in Harbor Town out on Mud Island just off of the Downtown riverbanks. Good deli counter for lunch.

If your weekend is the last weekend of the month, "last Fridays or Trolley Night" allows you to catch a trolley free of charge from the entertainment district down to the South Main Arts district where many galleries, boutiques and shops offer a free glass of wine and a musician or two at the storefronts.

Every Thursday afternoon The Peabody, The Madison, and the Residence Inn have Sunset Rooftop mixers. The Peabody's is open to the public with name local rock bands and drinks for sale (cover charge). The Madison has a loftier perch which means a better MS River view and band & beverage service (cover charge) and the14 floor Residence Inn is in between the two with a smoked and grilled dinner and beverages and sunset view (free for hotel guests)

Last for an upscale romantic dinner, The Hunt Phelan Inn offers ambience and 4 star dining.

There's more if these aren't enough. Just yell!

I'd say some of the lesser known toursit attractions are The National Ornamental Metal Museum, Elmwood Cemetery and Lichterman Nature Center.

Slightly more touristy, but still not packed would be Memphis Botanical Gardens and Dixon Gallery and Gardens.

Thank you!!! This is great and definitely gives me some things to do. We will be there at the beginning of June, so the trolley thing won't work out but that sounds like a lot of fun.

You're welcome! Oh, and the most obvious (public) activity for a romantic weekend would be a Cinderella horse drawn carriage ride through Downtown and a couple of parks. You'll have a variety of carriage choices for this ride lined up outside the Peabody Hotel.

You could have drinks on the rooftop bar at The Madison Hotel and have a romantic dinner at Iris. The view of the MS River is outstanding at The Madison Hotel.

Restaurant Iris @ 2146 Monroe Ave., Memphis, TN 901 - 590 - 2828.
