Memphis to Chattanooga

Hi All,

We are group of 3 people planning to visit Chattanooga around Nov 23rd for a day from Memphis. We intend to start early from Memphis in morning and reach Chattanooga by 11 am. Planning to cover Lookout Mountain, Walnut Bridge and maybe Ruby Falls/Coolidge Park before heading to Gatinburg from there next morning. Please suggest if it looks fine and all these places would be open and can be visited during Nov last week. Please suggest any alternative options if needed.

Thanks a lot!

Glad you are coming to Chattanooga. It is a beautiful area of our state.

I do think your timing may be a little off. Memphis is an hour behind Chattanooga, as Nashville is. You will also run into traffic around Nashville.

Ruby Falls and Rock City are stop Lookout Mountain. Ruby Falls is not weather dependent, since underground .

Coolidge Park can be driven to and park your car. There are parking meters. Or, you can walk the Northshore or across the TN. Pedestrian Bridge from the downtown side.

These 2 areas are about 20 to 25 minutes apart, depending on traffic.

Weather could affect your outdoor locations like Rock City, Coolidge Park, and the Walnut Street Bridge. Just be prepared for alternative plans.

The TN Aquarium would be a good alternative as it's all indoor.

Be prepared for crowds, being that it's Thanksgiving Week and schools are out in the area. Are you actually coming on Thanksgiving Day? Be sure to check to see that venues are open, if so.

Rock City will be having their Enchanted Garden of Lights event going on by that time, which might be nice if you like holiday light displays and such.

Thank you for information. With the day tour being closed for Rock City - will not be able to view the scenery during day. Would need to then remove this from the schedule. With only Enchanted Garden of Lights being available in evening, need to look for alternate options then.

Just checked and (according to their website) Rock City WILL be open on Thanksgiving Day for both a day visit and for the nighttime lights visit as well.

They only close on Xmas eve and Xmas day.

On the 23rd? Thanksgiving day? Will get back to you about what's open that day- but everything will be cranking on the 24th and I think the lighted boat parade may be that night. Will need to allow 5.5 to 6 hours from Memphis and possibly 3 to gatlinburg

Sounds like a pretty good plan and everything you mentioned will be open even if it's Thanksgiving Day.

Many visitors say they are visiting Lookout Mountain but never specify what they want to experience. There can be a lot to do on Lookout Mountain - visiting tourist attractions, National Parks, or the natural wildlife areas. So it would be great to know your general interests so that we can better suggest options.

Yes, we intend to reach on Thanks giving day Nov 23rd by afternoon 12 pm. We are interested in visiting tourist attractions and planning to go to Rock City to get good view of the valley and spend some time there. Please suggest if we can cover any other places to get good scenic views of Look Out Mountain.

What would be economical option for accommodation for 23rd night?

The most ideal place to stay would be in downtown Chattanooga . It is close to your desired destinations. Hilton Garden, Doublentree, Holiday Inn and Suites and Hampton Inn.

Just outside Chattanooga, off the Interstate, is a Fairfield Inn and Country Inn and Suites.

These are in Tiftonia.

If you stayed in downtown Chattanooga, you could walk the Pedestrian Bridge to Coolidge Park or use the complimentary shuttle, to a close by stop.

Downtown won't be cheap on a holiday night like Thanksgiving, but I'm not sure any place will be. Availability may also be an issue on a holiday, so check carefully.

Tiftonia exit off I-24 is #174 and you can find these hotel chains there to check:

Fairfield Inn & Suites

Holiday Inn Express

Country Inn & Suites

Hampton Inn

Clarion Inn

Just remember, if it's rainy or a low cloud ceiling that day, there won't be any scenic views into the valley from Lookout Mtn. Rock City is a good place if you'd like to go there anyway (provided the weather cooperates) and also Point Park near the Incline Railway.

Thank you all for the information. Is Incline Railway and Point Park part of Rock City or is it separate attraction? Planning to start with Rock City and then cover Incline Rail/Point Park. If we complete these two by 6 pm then may go for Ruby Falls else will skip it. Do we get to walk on the Walnut Bridge or just drive through it? Are both Coolidge Park and Walnut Bridge walkable from Downtown if we take a hotel there?

Thanks!
