Motorcycle trip

Planning (on short notice), a trip out to see the Black Hills, and Badlands (Crazy Horse, Mt. Rushmore, Wall Drugs, etc). We wnat to do this on a motorcycle (but avoid the Sturgis Rally). Will we burn up completely in July?

What would be a doable and enjoyable trip plan for about 5 days. Thanks in advance.

Weather is really impossible to predict anywhere anymore. It can be hot in July, but being from South Carolina, I'm sure you are used to heat.

Your question is tough to answer without knowing what you like to do. IMO, The must sees of the area include:

Mt Rushmore

Crazy Horse

Badlands

Custer State Park

Wind Cave

Jewel Cave

Devil's Tower

Your must sees might not be the same, however.

There are other things to see and do, including Spearfish Canyon. Spearfish is a nice place to ride.

You will want to order a travel planner at travelsd.com. You can also view it on line. Once you take a look at that and give us an idea what you want to see and do, we can attempt an itinerary.

These activities would fit in the 5 day time frame. You will want to allocate entire days to the Badlands and Devil's Tower/Spearfish.

Thank you so much for your help. I am guessing that Rapid City is the best airport?

Yes it is the closest airport but also a bit more expensive to fly into usually as its smaller.

Denver is a more economical choice if you are on a budget. Rapid is a great airport, however, because of its small size. If you do fly into Denver, it's about 6 hours to the Black Hills. Also, it's tough to get a non stop flight into Rapid, but the odds are much better for Denver.

Temps over 100 degrees are not unusual for that part of the state in July. Realistically, you are probably looking at temps in the lower 90s. The Badlands get especially hot. As Slrtravelplanner said, since you're from SC, you are probably used to heat. I'm not a biker, but the Sturgis bike rally is in early August, which is not much cooler than July, so those folks must think it's doable.

Your airport options are:

-Rapid City. As previously stated, this is the closest, but can be pricey.

-Denver

-Pierre. 3hrs. Small plane. Connections from Denver and Minneapolis. Obviously doesn't make a lot of sense to connect from Denver.

-Sioux Falls. 5hrs. Connections from Minneapolis and Chicago (and Denver- again, wouldn't make sense). Easy but extremely boring drive down I-90.

If budget is no object, the obvious choice is Rapid. Otherwise price the other options and see which is cheapest. It seems to me one of the other posters has mentioned something about flying into Billings, but maybe I have that mixed up with questions about Yellowstone.

Hello..we also will be in that area around same time..we are coming up from Colorado on the bike with hopes of just putting the bike across the border into Canada..This will be our 2nd trip during this time.Husband and his buddies also go up every year for the rally. So am I understanding right? You will rent bikes..let's say in Denver? Then ride up? It will be hot..but for us ,not as hot as here in Colorado. And well worth the trip..Have Fun!!
