Native American Arts and Crafts

I'll be in Rapid City the last full week of July; probably won' t have a car. Are there any areas in town, or near town, where Native Americans sell their arts and crafts-thinking of areas through New Mexico/Arizona where you can buy directly from the artisan.

Thanks.

I am not aware of anything like that in Rapid City. You can buy direct out at Crazy Horse. There are many Native Americans there selling their wares, but you would need a car to get to out there. If you are looking to travel around the area, you really do need a car. Would you ever consider renting one? Even just getting around Rapid, it would be helpful.

BTW, I love your avatar! :)

On Thursday evenings Rapid City has what they call "Summer Nights", an evening filled with food, drink, music and art. It is held dowtown on Seventh Street between Main St. and St. Joseph St. what is called Art Alley. Artists are all local and you might be able to find Native American artisans. Hours are from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. throughout the summer.

The Sioux Trading Post located on Sixth St. in Rapid carries supplies for local artisans. They might be able to answer your question.

While you are in Rapid go to the Prairie Edge Trading Post & Gallery on Main Street. They carry a lot of authentic Native American art and crafts. Although you do not buy directly from the artisan, this store is worth browsing through. Beautiful, beautiful items, Most, unfortunately, are quite expensive, though.

Like Slrtravelplanner said, consider renting a car. Crazy Horse always has artisans and is only about 45 minutes west of Rapid City, There is so much to see and do in this area such as Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse and Custer State Park, just to name a few.
