Denver to Mt Rushmore

Five 30-somethings doing a July 4th long weekend road trip Denver - Mt Rushmore - Denver. Where should we stop along the way? Any good hotel reccos - fun, with or near a bar? Restaurants? Can't miss attractions - would love to bike ride or horseback.

Thinking of staying in Cheyenne, Rapid City along the way.....or any other better spots? Looking for daytime and evening activities en route.

Thanks!

For touring Rushmore and Black Hills, the best spots are Keystone, Hill City or Custer. Denver is about 6 hours from Custer, so if you arrive early enough you might be able to make it all the way there rather than stopping in Cheyenne.

It would be helpful to know how many days you will have in the Black Hills area so we can recommend activities. Custer State Park and obviously Rushmore are must sees, but there are others. Blue Bell Stables is highly rated for horseback riding in Custer SP.

In Keystone, I like the Roosevelt Inn, and others like K Bar S Lodge. The Holiday Inn Express in Hill City is highly rated on here, and for a more historical experience, you could consider staying at one of the lodges in Custer SP. However, it is a holiday weekend, so many places may be booked. I'd start looking very soon.

DIA to Cheyenne is a bit under two hours and would give a decent jump on the drive for the next day if not arriving (and collecting luggage) extremely late. Cheyenne will have lots of choices but due to late arrival reserve ahead. Otherwise if real late Loveland, CO or Ft. Collins, CO just to get out of Denver metro area.

From Cheyenne use I-25 to US-18 at Orin then over through Lusk and into the Black Hills from Mule Creek Jct. to Edgemont. You could go up to Newcastle then over but US-18 and SD-89 passes through Custer and gives chance to see Crazy Horse on way up to Rushmore. About 5 hours drive time from Cheyenne.

Ditto onadvice to book rooms early. An option with more availability might be Deadwood with all the casino hotels there. Also lots of bar options and restaurants in walking distance of hotels.

With your rather limited time frame, I'd focus on Custer SP and Rushmore and see how time permits before adding anything else. I think Sequim's suggestion for lodging in Deadwood might be very workable for you, particularly if you are looking for bars/restaurants. Definitely start to look now, however, before things become totally booked.

Have a good trip.
