what should we see on the weekend vs weekdays? We are staying in Hill City area for 5 days (sat thru wed) and want to see and do everything in the custer, keystone, deadwood, spearfish etc .
When are you coming? I never found a tremendous amount of difference between doing things weekends or weekdays. It's not an area like Disney World as far as crowds are concerned.
You will want to avoid the 1st 1.5-2 weeks in August due to the Sturgis rally. It's the 75 anniversary, and they are expecting record setting crowds.
You're asking how to organize the trip, but this is a hard question for us to help you with since you really aren't being specific about what you want to see. If you post us a list, we can put together an itinerary for you.
I agree. Weekend vs. weekday is not going to make a huge difference. Make your plans based on weather and geographic proximity instead. You may want to go to the South Dakota forum and read the Top Question in the upper right entitled, "How do I set up a timeframe?"
which cave is better for 4 adults, the jewel cave or wind cave national park.
can you recommend a chuck wagon style dinner and entertainment for 4 adults, several are able and we are very flexible on city and location
Both caves are excellent. If you can see both, I'd highly recommend it. Jewel Cave is very open and offers more diversity in formations, whereas Wind Cave is more closed in (not for the claustrophobic) and is known for a unique formation called boxwork, which resembles spider webs. If you have to decide between the 2, go to nps.gov and look at images of both caves. I'd go for whichever one interests you most. If you choose Jewel, you should arrive at opening to insure an early tour time. They sell out quickly.
As for the chuck wagon dinners, I have not attended one, but many like the one at Blue Bell Lodge. I have eaten at Blue Bell, which is excellent. Others like Fort Hayes. Here is a link to the various dinners:

When you say four adults, do you mean active adults with no mobility issues? If so, know that both caves offer tours beyond the standard, basic, cave tours. For example, Jewel's Scenic Tour is the one taken by probably 90% of tourists. My husband took the Lantern tour in Jewel with a friend and absolutely loved it, but it is more strenuous. So, take a look at all the different types of cave tours offered by both caves before making a decision.
