Mount Rushmore

Hi there we are planning to go to Mount Rushmore in September, is Denver the best place to fly into to visit all the sights? We are then flying into Tampa

Denver is the most economical, but it's a 6 hour drive from there to the heart of the Black Hills. It's the closest major airport to the area. If money is no object, I would fly into Rapid City. It will be more expensive because it's a regional airport, but you will be near everything.

This is a really isolated area, so the airport options are limited. You will have to choose between price and convenience. Rapid City is a small airport and, as slrtravelplanner said, it is expensive. Denver will be cheaper, but the six hour drive will go through some really desolate (not dangerous) territory. Plan fuel and food stops carefully. One other option you could look at is Sioux Falls (not to be confused with (Sioux City). This would be a five hour drive, with the latter half also going through isolated territory, but on a busier road. Because Sioux Falls is also smaller, you might have to connect through Chicago or Minneapolis. Price all your options and see which works best.
