Planning a fall trip

I am considering a trip to Deadwood in Sept. Overall how is the town and how many days is an average stay?

Deadwood has some historical interest (Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Adams House, etc.) but it's mostly a place for casinos. If you don't gamble, then you probably wouldn't need more than a few hours to see the sights.

If you are interested in scenery, wildlife, Mt. Rushmore, etc. then there are better places in the Black Hills to base yourself.

I would not come all the way from NJ just to visit Deadwood. Most people include Deadwood as part of a vacation to the Black Hills area as a whole. I would give it anywhere from a few hours, as Longhorn said, to a day tops.

Because of its northern location in the Black Hills region, it's not the most convenient choice for a base, either. For more info on that subject, please check out the Top Question on the SD forum (this is the Deadwood forum) entitled, "How do I choose a base . . .?"

If you choose to see the Black Hills region as a whole, we also suggest fitting in the Badlands and Devil's Tower and suggest about five full touring days.

I completely agree with the above. Since you are a fellow Jerseyan, keep in mind the casinos in Deadwood are nothing like what you find in Atlantic City. They are small, consisiting mainly of slot machines., and many are old store fronts. A day at the very most would be more than enough for me. However the Black Hills region is worth 5-7 days of touring time.

For an idea of all the area has to offer, be sure to order a travel planner at travelsd.com.

Thanks for the reply. I want to tie this into a trip to Mt Rushmore and the Denver, Colorado area. Sounds like 2 nights will do. Still just in the planning stages.

This is easily done. We spent about 2 weeks this past summer touring the Black Hills, Rocky Mountain National Park, and Colorado Springs.

If you do 2 nights in Deadwood, be sure to incoprorate Devil's Tower and Spearfish Canyon.
