Head north on I-94 until you hit I-90 and then head west into the Black Hills.

But.......from Chicago to Mt. Rushmore is probably a solid 1 1/2 days of driving. I'm going to estimate 16 hours each way?

16 hours is a pretty good estimate.

Most drivers were traveling about 80 mph

We are in Keystone, SD, as I write this message. We traveled here from 60 miles west of Chicago. We drove 8 hours to Sioux Falls, stayed over (if you stay in Sioux Falls, be sure to visit Falls Park--beautiful park with water falls), then the next day we drove 5 hours to Keystone to stay over for 4 nights. We took I-90 the entire way. Be sure to keep a full tank of gas and bring lots of snacks if you are traveling with kids as there are no McDonald's, etc... on the way.
