October Family Trip - Suggestions/Thoughts

Sorry if this post covers a little too much ground, but I'm trying to find a place for my family to vacation in late September/early October that meets all of the needs/expectations of our group.

Traveling with me would be my wife and our two boys, 3 year old and 9 month old, and my in-laws. We are looking for a high-end rental home (my father-in-law prefers the nicer things in life) either on the beach or within a neighborhood that is within walking distance. We would need a pool within walking distance. A neighborhood/gated community type pool would be perfectly fine.

My initial search turned up the Prince George Ocean neighborhood. Anything you could tell me about that?

We are looking for a decent selection of restaurants, some golf, and other activities (possibly Kayaking and some general kid friendly site seeing). We are not opposed to driving 10-20 minutes on occassion, but don't want to have to do that every evening.

So my question is would Pawley's be a good place for all of these things? Do you have any recommendations with regards to rental homes?

Again, sorry for the lengthy request, but I figured it was worth a shot.

Thanks

I don't know Prince George, but I know where it is and it looks lovely online. Two other suggestions would be the Charlestowne Grant and Debordieu locations. Pawleys itself is a historic island, really a sandbar, and aside from Pawleys Pier Village, you are not likely to find a community pool on the island itself. Given your list of "wants," I think you are on the right track looking toward the "neighborhood" developments.

Here is a list of area rental companies. Over the past 30+ years, we've used most of them and have never had a bad experience:

http://www.dietercompany.com/

http://www.litchfieldrealestate.com/

http://www.lachicotte.com/

http://www.greatbeachvacations.com/

(This gets you to Dunes Realty that handles Litchfield and Pawleys Island rentals. There is another company by that name that handles Garden City, so don't be confused I was!)

http://www.jwsre.com/

(I have to ask...my brother in law who lives in New Albany emailed me last night for this list. If this was for you, it's a quite a coincidence! We share a funny last name, so if that fits, we have friends and family in common!)

IMO, the Litchfield Beach/Pawleys Island area has some of the most beautiful beaches anywhere. Myrtle Beach was selected on TA's recent poll as the best beach in the US, but LB/PI is even better...these are great beaches without the clutter! The area is developed enough to offer good restaurants and other amenities, but it's not overdeveloped.

I have to confess that when we get to our house, we tend to zone out and just enjoy the beach. We eat out, but we often take advantage of the fresh seafood at Pawleys Island seafood, the famous crab cakes from the Crab Cake Lady (available at the Piggly Wiggly as well as from her), frozen entrees and sides from the Kudzu Bakery (behind Piggly Wiggly), and carry out from Chive Blossom Cafe, especially the She Crab Soup.

Here is link to TA restaurant reviews, and I think they're on target, except for Frank's. It's one of our favorites in the area:

Here are links to the restaurants we know, and have enjoyed. There are other great places to eat, and hopefully you will hear more from other contributors:

Family Friendly (especially for small children):

Additionally, a Fresh Market grocery store was under construction when we were there last month, and it should be open in the fall. We're Whole Foods fans in Louisville, so we were glad to see Fresh Market franchise coming into the area.

If you are interested in inland water fishing, my husband and his friend had a great day fishing with "Captain Steve:"

If you follow this link, you will read more of what fellow travelers have to say about the Pawleys Island/Litchfield Beach area.

Look over this info and come back with more questions. We look forward to hearing from you, and should you decide that the area is right for you and you are driving, I'll share our driving directions. GPSes don't get it right!

Not a lot I can add to troggs' excellent response. The Prince George development was just coming into its own when the housing market tanked. I have not been in this gated area, so I'm not familiar with what's available for rental properties, but it is a very nice, very exclusive community.

It may be worth taking a quick look at Litchfield Beach & Golf Resort - http://www.litchfieldbeach.com/ In addition to many oceanfront condos, it also has vacation rental homes, and their amenities, including pools are very nice.

Black River Outfitters in Georgetown does a very nice job with guided kayak tours. http://www.blackriveroutdoors.com/ They also coordinate with Huntington Beach State Park for a guided kayak tour every Monday morning. I think that will still be going on in early October. southcarolinaparks.com/park-finder/…1020.aspx

I also recommend one of the boat tours out of Georgetown as a great family-friendly adventure. It's a wonderful way to see the real beauty of the Lowcountry. Cap'n Rod does a great job - http://www.lowcountrytours.com/

Just a few restaurants to add to troggs' list...

Prosser's in Murrells Inlet for lunch - It's a buffet with great bbq, fried chicken, usually fried shrimp and Southern cooked veggies. It's the best value around.

Russell's in Murrells Inlet - Our favorite for very fresh, very tasty seafood.

Bove in Pawleys Island - We ate there for the first time this week. I haven't had time to post a review, but it's the best meal I've eaten in Pawleys Island since the Community House closed in 2000(?). It was exceptional food but bring a thick wallet with you. <:-)

Hope y'all have a great visit. Let me know if I can help with any questions.

PS - The Fresh Market opened today. I hope to check it out soon, but the parking lot was packed today.

I got the email that a reply had been posted and noticed the Kudzu Bakery link didn't take. Let's try this one:

http://www.kudzubakery.com/

I also have to include a link to what I think is PID's favorite haunt:

http://www.pintandplate.com/

Pawleys island Dude and I have never met, but we've become friends on this forum. Can you tell that we love the place? One thing I would add to all that has been said is that you not expect a "planned" community in this area as you might find in Hilton Head or Kiawah...and that's why we like it. You can actually see stars that are faded out by larger communities. If you have an IPad, my son in law downloaded a app that, when you held it up to a constellation, it showed us what it was.

Tracts along Highway 17 opened up as estates were dispersed. The most notable is the Huntington property that are now Litchfield Beach, Brookgreen Gardens and Huntington State Park. The Huntingtons were NY philanthropists, and Mrs. Huntington was a sculptor. You can read more here:

southcarolinaparks.com/park-finder/…1020.aspx

Sewers were not in the area when we first visited in 1975, and with that, high rise hotels and condo buildings are not part of the landscape. Unlike many coastal destinations, this is an area of small businesses and local restaurants. Chains are there, but they're not the main attraction. The distance from 17 to the coastline is not very deep, so this is a row of neighborhoods along the coastline with businesses along the highway. Pawleys has been a fishing island since the turn of the century, and it's also where low country families spent their summers. There's a history here that sometimes means rustic houses, but good vibes! Murrells Inlet has been a deep sea fishing haven that boasts a string of restaurants, some "all you can eat" buffets, but don't miss the "Marsh Walk" and the view of "Goat Island." A trip to Georgetown's historic district is something you will also not want to miss. Don't let the industry in the area fool you as you drive in...the town is charming if you follow the signs to the Historic District. There is a great ice cream shop there on a quaint main street.

Forgive me for the overload! As Pawleys Island Dude said in another post, this is a place where we "keep the porch light on!"

Don't hate me...I'm back. I think Charlestowne Grant will be a more central location for the kind of property you want. It's on Litchfield and not as crowded as the beach can be on Litchfield by the Sea or the distance of Debordieu and St. George. The last two are lovely, "drivable," but less convenient.

PawleysDude - where is the Fresh Market? I love that store. Our new Trader Joe's opens soon in Mt. Pleasant, but I would take a Fresh Market any day.

'Morning CultureHound - It's a couple blocks north of the PI post office on Hwy 17. If you've been up this way lately, it's right beside a motel that used to be a Holiday Inn Express but now has a new name I can't remember.

They're very nice stores. In our previous life, we used to shop at one in Winston-Salem for special stuff. It can be pricey for your everyday grocery shopping. The grand opening mobs need to settle down before I venture over to this one. :-)
