Day Trips Coastal - History

Hi, We are going to NMB in mid April with our family pet. We have rented a small house close to the Beach for a week. We are not golfers and this is a break for us. Any suggestions for a couple of days trips - not too far but comfortable drive and viewing. We love scenery and history.

We have been to Charleston and love it but I am not sure this will be on our schedule this time. We are considering a separate trip next winter. Many thanks for suggestons.

Wilmington, NC Drive north on Rt. 17 and go to Southport, NC. Take a look there for awhile, then get on the Ferry to Ft. Fisher. Get on Hwy. 421 thru Kure Beach and Carolina Beach and head to Wilmington. Lots of history there. Take a tour of the battleship there. Head back via 17 (not 421) That would be a good, long day trip. You could stay in Wilmington too if you want. Lots to do there.

Georgetown SC, about an hour South of North Myrtle Beach. Georgetown is the 3rd oldest settlement in SC, behind Charleston and Beaufort. During the rice plantation period, it was one of the wealthiest locations in the US. There are several small but nice museums, and Front Street is a very walkable district with nice restaurants and small shops. It's a fun place to spend a day. If it interests you, Lowcountry Tours runs a very popular pontoon boat cruise of the area, past a number of old plantations, as well as the North Island lighthouse in Winyah Bay. It's highly rated by Trip Advisor users.

I agree with the 2 posters above. I have done both and loved them.

Maybe another day visit Brookgreen Gardens in Murrels Inlet. The azaleas may be blooming then. Across the street is a beautiful state park right on the beach with a historical building to tour. It is called Huntington State Park.

South of Georgetown is a plantation called Hampton Plantation. It is free to get on the grounds and a very modest fee for the tour. The time you are going is perfect to see the azaleas blooming on the grounds.

I was looking at that and I think we would love to see that as well.

The last time we had been to Wilmington which was a great day trip along with a tour of the battle ship.

The ideas being generated are great and appreciated. We love to travel and seeing the countryside is so much part of it. This trip is an easy "stretch" to drive for such a short period of time. Many thanks W

Would agree with the other suggestions re: Wilmington, North Carolina.... but would add a suggestion to check out their horse-drawn carriage rides in the historic area of the city.... we found it thoroughly enjoyable and learned more of the city history than we would have picked up on our own. I think doing a Google search for Wilmington NC carriage rides will get you info on where to find them once you get there....
