New Year's week trip???

We (2 adults and a 14yo) are trying to plan a trip somewhere new and Myrtle Beach came up.

We have never been and are not really sure if this would be a good place at this time. We thought of Pigeon Forge area (been there many times), Disney (been there several times as well and too crowded!). We just weren't sure of what to expect since it is off season, but since it is New Year's week I thought many things would be open. HELP! Any advice from people who know the area is appreciated!

1. Re: New Year's week trip???

With the exception of New Year's Eve, New Year's week is not a particularly eventful time down here. Still, the area maintains a reasonable level of tourism throughout the winter, so most of the major attractions now stay open year-round. The water parks will obviously close, as will many of the miniature golf courses, but there will be plenty to keep you busy. Some of the restaurants shut down for January and February, but a great many also stay open year-round, so that won't be an issue. Ocean water will be cold, and the weather is always a toss-up during that time, but if you get lucky, you can have some good beach days. Quite a few of the nice hotels have heated pools, which many visitors enjoy. Overall, with a luck weather luck, it can be a relaxed, quieter time to visit the area.

We've spent the week around New Years at Myrtle Beach for the last 10 years. We've had good beach days every year - not every day, but many days. No waits at restaurants (except on New Years Eve). Almost all of the major attractions are open and there are fireworks in the boardwalk area at midnight. Lots of folks also shoot off fireworks on the beach, and there are plenty of rebel yells off oceanfront balconies at midnight. Come on down!

It won't be warm, average highs are around 59F and lows are 36F, but there will be tons of things to do off the beach as most non-water attractions and restaurants should be open. If you pick a condo with an indoor water park or pool then you have more options.
