Along I-95 there are many options from Smithfield, NC to Wilson to Rocky Mount, NC. Look at Google Maps. Wilson is a little over 3 hours...about 3 and 15 minutes or so. Smithfield is before....and Rocky Mount after.

Do yourself a favor and go another route and avoid I-95 between Richmond and DC:

This route is much more scenic and less traffic.

Asheboro, NC is 3 hours from Myrtle Beach, has a nice mix of hotels and the NC zoo.

I would also suggest avoiding DC. You can do that by getting on I95 in Fredericksburg, Va. You will have some traffic on I95 from Fredericksburg the Richmond bypass (I295), but pretty smooth sailing after that.

Our favorite overnight stop has changed over the years. We currently stop in Dunn, NC at the Hampton Inn.

What's nice about this hotel is that it's easy off, easy on, there is a gas station (for a morning fill up) right next to the hotel and across the hotel parking lot is a very nice steakhouse (Sagebrush Steak House). Waling to the the steakhouse for dinner sure beats getting back in the car and hunting for something good to eat.

You are about 2 1/2 hours outside of Myrtle Beach if you stay at this exit.
