Kiawah--Spring Break (early March) or wait until May-June...

Have heard many good things about Kiawah, would early March be too cold to swim? Also, what about a place to stay, would a villa or condo be better. We want to be as close to the ocean as possible with a wonderful view. Thanks for replies!!

In early March, the water is still pretty cool. Walking along the beach or working on your tan would be ok. May-June is a better time for swimming. Check with Kiawah Island Golf Resort or ResortQuest for lodging recommendations and pricing. Units are rated according to the quality of the furnishings, so ask for the top rated or second best units. For ocean views, Windswept and Mariner's Watch villas are located near the Sanctuary while Seascape and Shipwatch villas are nearer the main gate and close to the Straw Market shops. Although all multiple unit rentals are called villas, Shipwatch is a condo type building with elevators and four floors. Whatever you choose, you will enjoy yourself!

All resort units, regardless of style, are called "villas". The free-standing cottage villa are especially nice if you are bringing a car because you can park right under your cottage.

If swimming is your interest, May/June is safer. For swimming enthusiasts I would recommend an Inlet Cove Cottage. Inlet Cove has its own pool. This pool is the only one on the island with an actual "deep end"; and since it is owned by the property owners, you don't have to be renting through the Resort to get access. (ResortQuest handles a lot of Inlet Cove cottages -- check their website for photos.)

The Inlet Cove pool is located next to the Kiawah River. There is a lovely dock from which you can observe the dolphins, etc. Beach access is easy by foot or bike through Beachwalker Park, which has very nice showers, snack bar, etc. (If you are feeling lazy, you can also zip your beach equipment over in your car and park in the parking lot.)

We went once during spring break in March. The outside temps are iffy at that time of year. The pools did not seem heated and the kids froze when they got out. Temps were great for biking, golfing, relaxing, but not great for swimming. We stayed 2x at the Night Heron Cottages. Great location next to Night Heron Park, pool, and a short walk to beach. Staying right on beach will cost you a premium. Rent bikes for the week and ride them wherever you want to go. There are outside rental agents that handle some of the properties there such as Pam Harrington Rentals - look in the back of Southern Living Magazine at the travel section for her ad.
