Trying to choose what kind of bikes to rent. We are a couple with a 2 and 4 1/2 yr old. Considering a bike with pull cart and a regular bike, but then I saw the Surrey bikes/buggies. They're the bench seat bike where the kids sit up front while we pedal. I was wondering which you see most of. And can you ride both on the beach? Also by looking on the map I see the road connects to Sullivan. Are both of these bikes seen or safe to drive on road, and across bridge to Sullivan?

I live on IOP and have never seen one of the "surrey" type here, not that I can recall anyway. To ride on the beach you need large, fat tires in order to ride on the wet, packed sand. There will be some areas of deep, dry sand and you will most likely have to push it over these areas ~ very difficult to ride in.

Please be aware that there are not bike lanes on most of the roads on IOP or Sullivan's. There is a narrow bike lane over the bridge between the 2.

There is a bike path on Waterway on the IOP, which covers a good bit of the island. There is also a path on a large stretch of Palm Blvd. The problem area is the stretch of Palm that runs for a couple of blocks in the "business district."

There is also a bike path along most of Jasper Blvd on Sullivan's Island.

The side streets on both islands don't have a lot of traffic and are ok for bikes... I do stop at intersections (even if I'm not the one with the stop sign) just to be on the safe side.

If it's high tide, you won't be able to ride on the beach, because the high water mark is the soft sand.
