What's the deal with Seaside Inn?

Anyone stayed at Seaside Inn? We're planning to stay there for four nights later this month, and the TA reviews are all over the place -- some really negative, and some are great! We're not expecting anything posh, but would like a decent, clean, comfortable room on the beach in close proximity to Charleston. Is that what we can expect?

We've ruled out Wild Dunes; a gated community is just not our thing and it seemed further from Charleston.

The Wild Dunes gate is another 5-7 minutes or so from the Seaside Inn. Then, depending on where you are in WD it could be another 5 minutes. I'm not sure what you have against the "gate" - it's often just an efficient way of pointing visitors in the right direction, slowing down traffic, and providing a sense of security.

I think the reason that the Seaside Inn comments are "all over the place" is because they are owned by individuals (some who have recently renovated; some have not). It's luck of the draw so that's why we suggest you ask to see recent photos.

On the beach, your choices are limited, so you will have to ante up. The beach areas around Charleston range from nationally protected land (no habitation whatsoever) to single family, large oceanfront lot homes, to islands that can only be accessed by boat, to a handful of hotels.

If you can get a room for later this month, book now.

The entire island is only 6.5 miles by .5 miles, so one thing can not be much farther away than another.

There are 3 options (other than homes and condos) on the Isle of Palms - the hotel in Wild Dunes, Seaside Inn and The Palms. Sullivan's Island has no hotels and Folly Beach has one.

Your other options are to stay in Mt. Pleasant or West Ashley (between the beaches and downtown) or stay downtown.

Oh, that's very interesting that Seaside Inn rooms are individually owned -- definitely explains the lack of consistency. We booked an oceanfront room and requested a higher floor. Does anyone know which are particularly good or bad rooms there?

I think it is a "condotel".

It is a condotel. I'd ask for recent pictures. The location is great.
