Help - have to completely start over!

Due to the situation on the Gulf Coast, my family of 7 (4 adults/3 teens) is searching for a replacement vacation. I planned and searched for months to choose the first one, so this is hard for me! We really like the location/feel of Wild Dunes or Isle of Palms, but have had no luck finding something on the water or very close to beach, which is what we've always had.

So far I've checked: VRBO, Homeaway, vacationrentals.com, island realty, wilddunes.com and resort quest. Units are either run down or not at all near the beach. Any ideas? Any one know of a friend or family member with a nice condo or villa for rent that sleeps 7? We are two professional families with well mannered, older kids. Any help at all or suggestions for other areas would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Have you considered other parts of the Isle of Palms? Wild Dunes is a very small portion of IOP. There are many very nice homes for rent of all sizes, ocean front or not, pool or not, etc.

Sullivan's Island (next island over) also has homes. Search these and see what you come up with. IOP is always quite busy in the summer, so I'm not sure how much you will find on short notice.

Another consideration is Kiawah Island (which is about 45 min away from Charleston) a gated community, very nice, altho more isolated.

MANY other people are abandoning the Gulf and coming to SC. This year you may have to accept a home not on the beach, etc in order to be able to come here.

Try these.....

I live on IOP, so I can give you info on certain locations if you see something you like.

Thanks for all the advice. I think I've already looked at all of those sites and areas, but I'll take another look. I think I could convince the rest of my family to walk a block or so, but we'd have to have pool access. We also may have to pay more than what we were planning. Thanks BP...

Many of the homes on IOP do have pools. Not to make light of your situation, but beggars can't be choosers - they may have to be willing to walk a block or two to the beach this year. After all, it is rather unusual circumstances.

You could also check DeBordieu Colony, which is between Pawley's Island and Georgetown. Again it is a little more isolated, but for that very reason, may not be full.

Try these houses on Kiawah, very close to the beach, most have 3 bdrms w/a hide-a-bed in the living room...

If you do find something on Kiawah that you are interested in, I'll be happy to help answer questions.

Consider Litchfield Beach or Pawley's Island. They are SC's best kept secret, and they've been our vacation home for over thirty years. Here are links to the area's rental companies. We've used them all and they're all good!

True, many people who would go to Gulf Coast go to SC instead. We have just returned from Edisto - most homes are fully booked until October....

Thanks everyone. We've found some options at Kiawah, but it's an awfully quiet area for 3 teenagers! We've found one condo in Wild Dunes that we like, but we can't book anything until Thur so it could be gone by then. I really like pictures I've seen of Pawley's/Litchfield, and we could always drive to some of the "stuff" at Myrtle, right? Or is it too far? Boogie boarding and body surfing the waves is something my bro-in-law and his kids really like to do, and I read that HHI has very calm water and also an ordinance against boogie boarding. Is this true? If so, I really need to find a beach with more wave action, if possible.

Our dates are June 26-July 3 - 4 adults/3 teens. Our other condo was $3500 tot. inc. all taxes/fees. At this point, we are willing to spend about another $1000 to salvage this vacation! I hope I'm not doing all this research for nothing: if BP won't approve our claim then we're stuck going to Perdido and not being able to get into the water. This is just all so sad, and I don't mean just for us - I'm just as sad for all the condo owners, residents and the wildlife. Thanks to all, and keep praying for the Gulf!
