When we were at POrt o'Call in Jan. 08 the beach was a little improved from aug. o7. We were told that renourishment would be completed by the end of May 08 and that the beach front would be usable at high tide in the summer. what is happening with the renourishment? Is there beach access at high tide? Are there walkways tyo the beach? Are there dunes? what will the beach for the summer of 08 look like?
Just today there was a story about the renourishment. The mayor was interviewed - he said it will probably start in May and take a few weeks. For summer 08 the beaches should be wide and beautiful - and rumors have it that some treasures might be dredged up (you know, there are many pirate ships known to have gone down off the coast here!)
I'm surprised they haven't started with the renourishment sooner, but it could be that they're using a company that's doing another beach (this is a pretty common thing on the coastline) that will be busy until then. Just a guess.
We just returned from Wild Dunes in May right before Memorial Day. The dredging/beach restoration project had just started and is in full swing on the northern end of Wild Dunes - practically right in front of Port O' Call. I took a peek and some pics where they are now removing the sand bags that lined the beach front condos. There are no dunes and the 'beach line' for high tide is all the way up to the wall outside one of the Port O' Call pools. However, this project is a 24/7 operation that is scheduled for completion August 1. While we were there, they were very busy getting our beach back!
