NEED ADVICE! Wild Dunes and Beach Erosion

We wanted to make our second trip down to Wild Dunes...last time was in 2006 and we loved it. We stayed at 41 Ocean Point. It was overlooking the 17th & 18th of the Links Course and beyond that was a huge beach. Since then we have heard that the Beach is GONE in several areas of Wild Dunes. In Fact we heard that part of the golf course was even washed away! Can anyone familiar with the area give me any insight as to what properties still have a Beach and Which do not? I don't want to make the long trip just to have my wife and son crushed to see they have no beach. It is the only reason they loved it so much.

Thanks in Advance!

It is true that part of the 18th hole washed away. However, the most recent news about a week or 2 ago said that beach renourishment was supposed to happen this spring. Point blank ask the realtor you're using. They will have the most updated info. If they say they're not sure I'd be skeptical - if they rent a lot it's their business to know. Get them to guarantee your trip - that they have to find you comparable or better beach lodging in case the beach isn't fixed where you want to be. They might never have to move you, but this way you will not have to worry.

To clarify - the beach erosion affects only the northernmost part of the island. However, there are parts of the south end that have been "roughed up", but the homes are not at all in peril. (there has just been some scraping of the dunes near 3rd street, but there is a safe distance still from homes to water).

I'm sure you will have a great time! Enjoy!

Hi. I’m the Director of Golf at Wild Dunes Resort, and I wanted to comment on your question regarding the beach erosion on the Isle of Palms. Currently, the erosion is affecting the very northern end of the island. There are a few homes and villas that are affected, and property owners are working to combat the erosion with sand bags. In addition, the 18th hole of the Links Course has been affected. We’ve worked hard to maintain the integrity of the hole, and the 18th hole plays as a par 3 now, instead of a par 5. The 17th hole has not been affected at all. With regard to Ocean Point 41, the home is unaffected by the erosion. The community is working together to find a solution, and a renourishment plan is in the works now, although a definitive timeline has not yet been established. The majority of the erosion has happened at the very end of the island, and the bulk of the resort – including most oceanfront properties – have been left unaffected. If I can answer any other questions, please call me at 843.886.2165 or email me at jminton@wilddunes.com.

Wow - thanks for the update! And good luck - that is one of the nicest golf courses in South Carolina, even with the slight change in the layout.
