Twenty Nests and Counting

Another Loggerhead Sea Turtle nest was recently discovered on Pine Island in Hilton Head Plantation. It was laid a while ago, but went undetected until last week when a ghost crab got into it. This increases the total for the season to 339. Unfortunately, the 3 at Mitchelville Beach never hatched (one was actually poached by someone- so sad).

As of yesterday, there were 20 nests left to hatch. The last one is estimated to hatch on or about 10/8 given the average incubation period.

Continue Lights Out until the last hatchling has emerged.

South Carolina recorded almost 5100 nests this year- a record for the state. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) anticipates that next year will we will see an even larger increase.

Thanks to everyone who has helped to protect our nests here on Hilton Head!

The two by us have been flagged as near to hatching. We're walking down as soon as there's pre-dawn light in hopes of seeing them hatch. It's so exciting!
