Considering a trip May or June next year

We have never been to the area but are considering renting a house or condo for a week late spring or early summer next year. I am not sure if this is the right location for us and if so what part of the island would be recommended.

Our group will be two couples with three kids ages 18 months, 4 years, and 5 years. We do not like built up beaches with tons of tall condos bad traffic etc and we will be coming from eastern Kentucky. We thought Hilton Head might be good fit. We would like to find a beach that is not to rough or crowded and is scenic. Our budget is about $1000-1500 for the week. The house/condo would not have to be ocean front or even ocean view, but good beach access would be nice. We typically rent VRBO and have had good experiences. We like reasonbly priced casual restaurants. Is Hilton Head right for us? Also considering St. George island in Florida.

What part of Hilton Head island would be recommend for our group? We have no golfers.

Read the "sticky" on Plantations at the top of the forum page to give you a sense about the island. HHI is about 13 miles long and 5 miles wide (approximate). It has several plantations (gated communities) as well as non-gated communities. The "busiest" part of the island is typically the south end that consists of Sea Pines, Shipyard, Palmetto Dunes, Shelter Cove and the Forest Beach (non-gated) area. Having said that, late spring/early summer (before 4th of July) is a great time to visit as the greatest number of visitors is usually July to mid-August.

HHI is committed to nature and has made it a priority to maintain the natural beauty of the island. You will not see high rise condos or hotels- I believe the highest floor allowed is 6th (or around that), but most homes/villas are 1-2 stories. Even businesses along the main road (Route 278- Wm. Hilton Pkwy) are carefully designed and blend in with the natural environment. HHI also has 50 miles of bike and leisure paths to enjoy. You can log onto: www.hiltonheadisland.org to get some more information about the island itself and the activities available.

There are so many options for houses/villas, but all are family friendly. Each person has their "favorite" location on the island, so it is difficult to advise you on that. Perhaps after reading the post about "plantations," you can begin to narrow down your choices, but mostly, it's tough to go wrong here.

Hope this helps.

As for timing, definitely take advantage of the lower rates and fewer people in late May if you can. We've been going to HHI for 10+ years and 2014 will be the first year our vacation is restricted by when schools get out and we're not looking forward to paying the $1,000 - $1,500 difference in pricing for a week between late May and early June. Still worth it though.

You won't find many tall condos on HHI. You may though, be challenged by your budget. I'd look at South Forest Beach, Sea Pines and Palmetto Dunes on VRBO.

I agree with the May dates. I'd also be sure to rent bikes and get a cart for the littlest ones. Biking to the beach would be fun. Two carts might also be good depending on their proficiency on bikes and your proximity to the beach. Hilton Head sounds like a great place for your group.

We first went to HH when our two were 4 and 18 months and we love it there, its a great place to relax with kids, plenty to do, good restaurants and the kids love biking. We prefer the Shipyard area it's a little closer to Coligny beach area which is an easy bike ride along the beach or the bike paths. You should be able to get a great place on VRBO for your budget. Kids would love the Shelter Cove Shows but have a feeling they start in late June early July.

We typically go in May /June and it always seems a good time to go, not to busy.

Can't comment on the part of Florida you mentioned but as we have tried many areas of Florida and keep gong back HH as not only has it everything we want, it has it close by. If you wanted to you could bike to the beach or the store without a problem.

There s also a thread on here it really should be a sticky on phone so can't find it, it is something live warning do not go to HH....because once its in your heart you will never want to leave.

St George and HH are two completely different places. HH is basically a resort ; SG is a beach island.

Thanks for the input. I will look into those areas In genera, will we be able to find reasonbly priced restaurants - say $10 for a lunch? I noticed some 3 br rentals in our price range at Ocean Palms in Port Royal. Would the beach be good in that area?

Ocean Palms is near the Marriott Barony Beach Resort and the Westin. The beach there is the widest on the island currently as it was part of a multi-million dollar beach renourishment about 2 years ago. The general location is mid- island ; few places within walking distance, but if that is not a priority, it's a great spot.

Most restaurants have plenty of lunch items for under $ 10. You can view menus at: www.hhidining.com.

I agree - $10 is no problem for lunch, and during the week, some places will have good lunch specials. One Hot Mama's is an especially good value for weekday lunch.
