Is swimming at Folly Field beach dangerous?

I have read that there are dangerous rip tides and under-tow at this beach. We are staying at Fiddlers Cove and was unaware of this when we booked. Is this all of the time or only during rough surf?

We used Folly Field beach for 12 years and never had any undertow or riptides. The last couple of years we have stayed in Shipyard so unless something has drastically changed in two years, there are no riptides or undertow. The beach Folly Field is great because it is not nearly as busy as other areas of the island.

Fiddler's Cove was the very first place we stayed when we first visited HHI about 18 years ago. The beach at Folly Field is a great one; we loved it. It is not any more dangerous than any other beach on HHI. All beaches require a degree of common sense and respect as waves can vary in size and strength based on differing weather conditions.

Please enjoy the beach. If the surf is rougher one day than another, just don't venture out as far. Remember, HHI is part of a sand bar system and as such, there are rip tides between the bars constantly. That is why HHI has fewer shells washing up on the beach.

I have been staying at The Island Club at Folly Field for the past 10 years and have not had any problems with rip currents. Some years the side current is stronger than others but that is typical. If anything, I would say it is safer than Myrtle beach due to the large sand bars that have been growing from the north end of the island for the past several years. We have stayed there and had days where the waves are calm and cannot breach the sand bar. The beach surf would be in the 1'-2' range at most and the water temp like a bath tub due to lack of wave action.
