Relocation

After a lot of searching, my wife and I came to the conclusion that South Carolina would probably be a good place to retire. Therefore, we are seriously considering Greenville but, Hilton Head is also under consideration. We are aware, of course, of the many differences between the two but will be obliged to receive some comments on why Greenville and/or its surroundings would be a better choice. It would be interesting to get information about what are the best areas to live. We know that downtown Greenville is beautiful but it seems really expensive. A suburb not far from town would work for us. Any help is highly appreciated.

1. Re: Relocation

Check some of the older postings in the Greenville forum- you will see all kinds of opinions. IMHO: Greenville may be a good place to retire, if you like the small city atmosphere- 1A baseball, walkable downtown with good restaurants, about ½ way btw Atlanta and Charlotte, 3 hours to beaches, less than 1 hour to the mountains. It does have 4 seasons, something some Fl transplants like, and others do not.

We take some vacations at HHI and think it is higher priced than Greenville, much more hot/humid in the summer, but also warmer in winter.

A lot depends on what you are looking for, in your retirement.

You probably should visit and have a realtor take you around to see the varied locations you might want to live. Good luck!

usc 1 mart,

Thank you for your kind reply. We are currently working with a local real estate agent and have paid one visit to the city but are also interested to hear from other "sources" which areas in Greenville are more desirable. I read that East Greenville, for instance, tends to be more likeble. So, any other input will be equally appreciated.

3. Re: Relocation

Peluch, desirable depends on what you are looking for. If you want upscale suburbs, east side is generally desirable. The west side is revitalizing, if you want to try that. If you want land, you have to go out a little ways, if you want water, Greenville is about 1 - 1 1/2 hour from Lakes Hartwell, Keowee, and Jocassee. If you want mountains, north Greenville or into NC. If you want to be close to certain things, like a church, physician, sports club, etc., that may drive your choice. If your Realtor is good, they should be able to steer you to what you want. One thing that drives many relo decisions is schools- and they vary quite a bit. Lucky for you that probably is not one of your needs!
