Bookending Charleston with a week in Hilton Head

We are spending May 17-24 in HIlton Head and we've decided to fly into Charleston and spend the day of May 17 and the afternoon/evening of May 24 in Charleston. We will have our two 3 year olds with us. We're staying at the Fairfield Inn in North Charleston (free Marriott nights!).

1. How long of a drive is it from Charleston to Hilton Head?

2. Any suggestions on things to do/see?

Thanks in advance!

The trip is a little over 2 hours, not accounting for any heavy traffic.

There are 3 Fairfield Inns in N. Charleston, which one?

All I can say is you'll wish you'd planned more time in Charleston.

Take a carriage ride.

You'll probably have about a 20-30 minute drive from your hotel to the Historic District.

That is near the airport and adjacent to the outlet mall. There will be a number of chain type restaurants nearby, as well as Walmart, Sam's, etc. There is a Fireman's museum there that is an excellent stop, I would take the kids there.

The historic district is part of the original city of Charleston. Many building that are several hundred years old, the old City Market, here since well before the Civil War, historic homes to tour, The Battery ~ which is the waterfront area by Charleston Harbor, filled with huge, magnificent old homes. Historic churches, buildings dating back to the 1700's. Fort Sumter, where the first shots of the Civil War were fired. Everywhere you turn, there is something historic. Do a little research and you will see what is available. Read over the Top Questions About Charleston to the right of this page... this will give you lots of info.

3-year-olds might not be that interested in the fire museum unless they're on the older end of 3. They'd love the Children's Museum of the Lowcountry. http://explorecml.org/cml/

Also, check out the Charleston Visitors Center website for children: http://www.charlestonfamilyfun.com/

Middleton Plantation is good for kids (not the house tour). Lots of wide open spaces and a stableyard with heritage breeds and artisans in period apparel. Peacocks and sheep wandering the grounds, too.

Have you looked into the Charleston Aquarium? We have gone there with my children and nieces and nephews ranging in ages from toddlers to young adults. It is a smaller Aquarium but the kids always found it fun. Depending on how your kids do eating out, we have found that SNOB has worked well after visiting the aquarium. I believe Saturdays are change over days on HHI. If so, expect heavier traffic leaving the island.
