I had been researching the Thanksgiving Dinner options in Charleston before our brief family get-together. Middelton Place Restaurant sounded like it had the best option along with some positive feedback from others.
I've been to the plantation on previous trips so I know the place well. However, Thanksgiving dinner didn't turn out nicely at all. It was overpriced, the portions were stingy, and the food wasn't excellent - just OK. We opted for the restaurant instead of the buffet which was probably a mistake. Our $29 meal only included the small entree which left about 50% of the plate empty. Drinks were extra, dessert was extra, heck they even charged me an extra $10 per person just to drive in the gate to GET to the restaurant.
When they say come after 5:00pm and view the gardens for free, they actually mean if you show up BEFORE 5:00 we will CHARGE you extra just to drive in...doesn't matter if you actually walk around the gardens or not.
So our $29 Thanksgiving dinner turned out to be $29 + $3 drink + $7 dessert + $10 entrance + $7.50 tip = $56.50 per person. I thought that was extremely misleading when the food really wasn't anything wonderful. Just small portions of mediocre tasting dishes.
For the first time (and I've been to Charleston at least 20 times) I felt like a tourist that had been "snookered".
Thanks Middleton Place - you really made a memorable Thanksgiving Day for my family (not)!
