help with activites for trip with young child

I would like advice for upcoming trip to Charleston. I will be visiting with my 7 year old son and husband, however, husband will be in meetings a majority of the time. We are staying at the Francis Marion. We are all history lovers so we are very excited to see all of the sites. We will be there 5 days, any advice on things we must see or even better, things close to our hotel? Thanks for the help!

Definitely do a carriage ride, and either a Ft. Sumter tour or a Harbor Cruise. Francis Marion is right in the heart of the shopping district. Most of the tour related stuff is a bit closer to Market St. Consider a civil war walk, Jack Thompson has a good one that leaves from the Mills House. The Aquarium is a short walk from your hotel and would be fun.

Check at the Visitor's Center, on Meeting Street, for any special events that might be interesting to your son. From the visitor's center you can get info on tours and pick up discount coupons.

Your son might enjoy a trip to Patriot's Point to tour the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown.

Also, the plantations surrounding Charleston have lovely gardens (including swamp gardens) for walking, and offer museum exhibits and demonstrations of plantation life. Middleton Place even does an alligator walk.

Right behind the Visitors Center is the interactive Children's Museum of the Lowcountry. We've had several guests take their children, with rave reviews. Maybe they didn't enjoy it more, but the parents seemed to have at least as much fun as the kids. It's also within easy walking distance for you and your son from where you are staying. Check out their website at http://www.explorecml.org.

Right across the street from your hotel is Marion Square park, where you'll find remnants of the original Citadel.

Once you arrive in town, go to the closest bookstore and see if you can find a copy of "Joseph's Charleston Adventure". Review from Amazon.com: "If you live in Charleston, visit Charleston, or just plain love Charleston- this book is a must have. The mayor proclaimed it "The Official Children's Book of Charleston." The book was written as a walking tour and is perfect for kids of all ages. Definately a book to have in your child's library!"

How fun to have the opportunity to explore Charleston through the eyes of a 7 year old. Enjoy your time here, and with your son.

A child that age will probably like the Charleston Aquarium. It's small, but it is well done. The fish in the biggest tank are quite interesting to watch. It's right next to an IMAX theater. Perhaps they will be showing something that would really interest him.

The Aquarium is also next to the Port of Charleston container docks. Most 7 year old boys that I know would be fascinated with the big container ships. There is a viewing area next to the Aquarium. Well, at least there was a couple of years ago!!!!
