Best place and time to buy fresh fish from the aea

Where are the best places to buy fresh fish here in Narragansett area? Is Port Judith and the local fish markets the best area - or are there other markets in some of the towns. We would prefer not to buy from Stop and Shop.... We are staying in Narragansett but can also drive to Newport if that's the best place.

Driving to Npt definitly not necc. Most all is fresh and local in PJ. Just went to market at Block Island Ferry terminal. High turnover = very fresh. The local swordfish now, especially, is delicious, very sweet, don't overcook!. Prices are more or less the same everywhere. Don't go to S&S at this high season, even though they too get our local catch. Local tuna, local swordfish, local farm-raised Atlantic salmon- all great in addition to the other clams & crusteachons.

I third the Point Judith vote. Fresh fish can be had @ Champlin's (they have a market underneath their restaurant). If you are looking for lobster, you can buy it right off the boats. It will be less expensive than buying at any local store. You can buy culls (one-clawed lobsters) for pretty cheap. Many of the lobster boats dock near the State St. area in Galilee. Take a right off Escape Rd. and then a left onto State St (it is near the area where you can get a lot of the fishing charters). Belmont Market in Wakefield does have very fresh seafood each day, though going to Galilee is a lot more fun. The Alternative Food Co-Op in Wakefield also has fresh fish from local boats each Friday.

The docks of Galilee at 4:30pm - yesterday I bought 8 lobster culls for $48 - from a boat just arriving from pulling their traps. Lobster for dinner and lunch - pretty perfect memory to cap a great vacation.

Does anyone know if the lobster fishermen head out on Saturdays as well?
