Many Questions...Please Help!

Hello,

I'm just starting to research a future trip to Block Island. It would be in the beginning of May. Is this a bad time to visit weather wise? We love to bike and I'm wondering if this makes sense.

Also, if money were no object, what is the nicest place to stay?

We will be coming from NYC that weekend. Am I correct that we'd get the ferry in Newport?

Thank you for any advice you might have!

The beginning of May could still be a little cool, especially at night, but you could also hit a great stretch of weather too. My advice would be to go later if you could, but if not be prepared clothing wise for a little bit of everything.

Also, if you are driving up from NYC you don't have to go to Newport. Point Judith would be the closest ferry location. Or, if you wanted, you could drive out to the tip of Long Island and take the ferry from Montauk over to Block Island.

As for best place to stay, we like the 1661 Inn and Hotel Manisses, two seperate buildings with the same owner and in the same area. The 1661 Inn has some of the best room views on the island.

I would also recommend at this time of year the National Hotel. In the height of summer it can get a little noisey and crowded, but in early May it won't be. Also, it has perhaps the best food on the island.

Finally, please bear in mind that in early May the island is still waking and warming up from the winter. Even in early May some places may still be closed. But the biking and hiking should be very good.

Enjoy!!

Just a hint, after Labor Day but before Columbus Day would be a great time. The weather can still be very nice also. Right after Columbus Day weekend the island starts shutting down for the winter.

JDP is right. BI in the fall after Labor Day is a special time there. I've had to cancel a trip in early May because the ferry didn't run because of the wind and weather. I love going over any time of year, but it's not for everyone. My husband and I have spent just about every New Year's there. Quiet!!

JDP is also right about 1661 Inn or Hotel Manisses. It is the only place we stay!!

I think I'm correct in saying that the closest ferry would be in New London, CT. It's the high speed ferry and costs a little more but it gets you there in 1/2 hour and is minutes off of I-95, near the casino exits.
