Block Island in Mid-May

My parents want to go to Block Island from Long Island in mid-May. Is anything open at that time or does it all remain closed until the end of May? Also, does anyone know how to get there in May - the ferries appear to only run from Montauk from June to October.?(Don't tell me those poor people are stuck out there on that island all winter long!) Any information would be helpful - thanks!

Many of the island's business are open, at least during the weekends, by the end of April. While the majority of hotels, inns, etc stay shuttered until Memorial Day weekend, a few such as the Atlantic Inn and the Manisses Hotel keep a light on all year.

Other than sailing or flying over using one's own boat or plane, the only way to get to BI in off-season is by commuter airline from Westerly RI (on the CT state line) or by "slow" ferry from Pt Judith RI (due south of Providence.) Vehicles can be taken on the ferry, but you need to reserve ahead of time and it's not cheap.

The "shoulder seasons" (mid-May to Independence Day, and Labor Day to Columbus Day) are an awesome time to take a BI trip during. You won't freeze - or melt, and the mobs that take over the streets in town and the beaches are nowhere to be found.

I have been to BI twice, both in May (I have friends with a rental house and we stay their for our vacation before rental season). Had a great time, both times. Places are generally open, just with more limited hours. *much* easier to get around by car, you can always find a space. It is also a great time to enjoy the trails and hiking without a ton of tourists. It really feels like your own island. One thing to keep in mind it is *cold*. And I am from Buffalo, my tolerance is high. You should bring long pants and sweaters. Rates will most likely be more reasonable at this time. I always took the ferry out from RI so I don't know about montauk. I know you can take the ferry from new london and point judith at that time of year. We were brave and actually went swimming. The beaches have alot of rocks that early so wear shoes if you try this, and be prepared for cold water.
