First time in the 'Burgh

On July 2, I will be going to Pittsburgh for the very first time to see the Pirates/Phillies game at PNC Park. I do not really know what to expect; I've only seen the city from Google Street View and other websites online. The two main questions I have are:

1. Since the game is at 7:05 PM and I live in York (which is about 3 1/2 to 4 hours away from Pittsburgh), I am looking for hotels as I am not a nighttime type of driver. Does anyone know of any decent but reasonably priced hotels nearby; not necessarily in downtown but close enough to PNC Park?

2. Where should I park my car when going to the game? If so, how much does parking cost? Would it be better to take a bus or other public transportation to the ballpark?

Your feedback will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

<reasonably priced hotels >

Yes, but what is reasonable to me, might not be reasonable to you. During the week, like Tuesday July 2, will be pricey to stay downtown. I think midweek rates downtown are around $200/night. You could check the airport / Robinson / Neville Island area and save a few bucks. Also, there is the Best Western Parkway Center Inn a few miles outside of downtown - & operates a free shuttle into downtown (the shuttle schedule probably ends before the game is done). If you drive/park, you will spend anywhere from $5 to $20 or so - tons of ramps/choices.

Final Tip: I've used Priceline a couple times, and tried to bid out a stay downtown. Sometimes it works, sometimes not, but you pay upfront and don't get to choose where you end up. I stick with 4* and only downtown/center area. If you want to try this, visit www.betterbidding.com for help. There are a small group of 4* wins and 3-1/2* wins listed.

I honestly was considering hotels in Robinson Township, Pittsburgh Airport, or Cranberry. To me, those seem cheaper than downtown.

I used to work in the Robinson /Moon Township area. Tons of choices, but your still >$100 midweek, probably closer to $150. Good Luck. Maybe get a reservation in that you can cancel up to the date of arrival, then go searching for better as it gets closer.

Just an fyi - you will be coming at the time of the Regatta, so hotel rooms may be more than at other times as this is a big attraction in Pittsburgh.

You should have a great time in Pittsburgh if visiting over the 3Rivers Regatta (7/2-7/4). It is our signature event of the Summer with speed boat races, concerts, fireworks on the 3rd and 4th of July, and many other attractions. Be sure to check out their website and plan to spend lots of time Downtown along the Northshore and along the Allegheny River side of Point Park. You may also want to take in one of the outdoor amphitheatre concerts at the RiversCasino as well. Best news of all for cash-strapped tourists paying inflated hotel bills: Everything at the Regatta is FREE!

Enjoy your visit to Pittsburgh!

If you are coming from York you are probably taking the turnpike so staying in Robinson really makes no sense. You should look for a hotel near Harmarville or Monroeville. You could even do cranberry but you are going to drive past the city so I would prefer Harmarville as you should be able to get a good deal there. You should be able to get the days inn for under $100.

as far as parking, normally I would say park at the casino for free and walk the river to the stadium. Its a little over a mile of flat walking. However with the Regatta happening that day they will probably charge for parking. I would expect to pay $15-$20 if you arrive early for all day. If you come after 5pm you can park downtown for $5.

barbiaux: Great comment, that I lost track of when I read the post. If you're coming from the East, only downtown to see the game, and will be heading back East the day after the game - why stay West. I guess the OP needs to decide how far he wants to drive back to a hotel, after the game.

Thanks everybody!!! I think I will probably go to Monroeville and spend the night there when I go.
