pre Christmas travel

Were visting Pittsburg to watch our son play hockey, we will be arriving Nov 30th til Dec 3rtd, we are arriving by plane, and will be renting a car, I thought it would be fun to stay downtown for one night we will be arriving early on the thursday. We are staying on Mcknight road hampton inn Suites in Shadeyside where our son will be the rest of the stay. Are there any recommendations on where to stay the first night, for christmas lights, shopping great restraunts? Willing to splurge, a place that provides parking for our rental car.

Staying downtown would be a great idea for at least a night ... at this time of year things are quite festive. You have quite a number of choices all over the map price wise. But, need some clarification about some details..... what is the address of that hotel, and where is the tournament?. Shadyside (the neighborhood) is not in the same area as McKnight Road... so need some help!

Just so you know...spelling matters here or you’re going to get lost or confused. Shady Side (2 words) Academy, where your hockey matches are, is not in Shadyside (1 word) the neighborhood. It’s in Fox Chapel (2 words).

Downtown would tick many of your boxes and all hotels have parking, but for a fee. The exception is the Hampton Inn & Suites on Smallman. It’s reasonably close to downtown and very handy to the Strip, which has the most unique shopping in the immediate area. The Strip is an old warehouse area with lots of ethnic grocers, food stands, restaurants and a fair number of shops. Lots of Pittsburgh team fan gear, a couple of candy shops, kitchen supplies, gifts, etc. Many of the most highly rated restaurants in the Burgh are downtown. These are super-popular and often require reservations. More info on cuisine and budget will get you specific recommendations.

There are several cool hotels downtown if you want something upscale. The Fairmont, Hotel Monaco and Omni William Penn are all nice, but different from each other.
