The Sturgis Pretzel House - very disappointed this year

Each year we make a stop at The Sturgis Pretzel House and buy several 3-5 lb bags of the broken pretzels to bring home. Well, this year when we stopped in, we noticed that the place had completely changed and all of the rooms were empty. When we asked where the bulk pretzels were, the man at the counter said that they were no longer able to sell them because of the "twist ties". He explained that the department of agriculture said it's not sanitary because people can open the bags, take some and reseal. Didn't sound like a very good excuse to me. After all, they still have loaves of bread on store shelves in PA!!

Anyway, desperate to find some bulk pretzels, we stopped by Tom Sturgis Pretzels (which is not affiliated with The Sturgis House) in Reading, PA. They did sell what we were looking for and they told us they had never heard of the twist tie story.

Hammonds Pretzels in Lancaster had the broken pretzels. But they may have run into the same issue?
