Driving from Sydney to Byron Bay

Oh, another thing...We'll be driving to BB from Sydney. How long will that take...and where would be an interesting/fun spot with lots of local character to spend a night along the way? I am SO SO looking forward to this!

Byron takes about 9 hours in Good traffic..at Christmas break...????? dpends on what hitches you get on the the HWY.

Whatever you do DO NOT GO OVER the speed limit...you WILL get a fine!

We usually stop at port macquarie (but it depends on available accom as this is peak season for all the local places) and have a meal at Cassegrain Winery.

Other good spots to stop on the coast with locla character are either too far south or too far north to break the drive. You might try crescent head but i can't suggest anywhere...even camper van spots are hard to come by!

We've completed our jaunt from Sydney to Byron Bay. Going north, it took us 7 hours to Port Macquarie which is less than half way. That counts intense traffic on 12/27 and 30 minutes of being lost on the way out of Sydney. The next day, it took another 7 hours to get to Byron. Granted, we took it easy...had a banana split at the Big Banana etc. On the way south, we stopped for two nights...A terrific overnight in Yamba, at the Yamba Beach Motel. (Really nice, friendly and thoughtful...for instance, a piticher of cold water in the mini fridge...with a good cafe too.) The second, not-so-great layover was in Raymund Terrace (Country Comfort property called Sir Francis Drake. However, dinner at a local pub as the sun was setting over the river and fields beyond was a compensation.

Nine hours to Byron Bay from Sydney is a best-case scenario.
