Driving in Cornwall -two old ladies from the US

Hi- My sister and I have gone on driving trips in France - Great. Now we want to go to Cornwall and I want to go to the Lizard. Is driving difficult in Cornwall? Is there lots and lots of traffic? we would probably be driving slowly, cautiously, since we are not used to driving on the left. Any advice would be appreciated. ps my Great Grandmother was from St.Keverne, we will probably want to poke around the cemeteries.

Driving can be quite awkward in Cornwall, particularly in season. When do you intend going ?

Traffic should not be too bad by the end of September. Start your planning.

I wouldn't say it's awkward just that some of the roads are narrow, slow and steady should work just fine.

Suggest hiring an automatic when you get down there. You would need to pre-book this.

Hi Gladys and welcome to the forums,

Firstly when booking your hire car note that if you want an automatic rather than a "stick shift" you will have to specify that to the hire company.

Make it a smaller car too. You will be more easily able to guage the width when you get into the little places. Also easier to find a parking space.

September is a beautiful time in the West Country when you get the pleasant weather and everything is considerably quiter and going at a gentle pace.

The roads will be quiet at that time of year and all the crowds will have gone so it's a good time to visit.

The main thing to remember is to plan your journeys using the main A roads as far as possible and be very aware (as someone else has mentioned) that the minor roads and lanes can be very narrow. You probably won't be able to avoid all the lanes but if in doubt about the best route to take to somewhere, just ask a local person. I'm sure they'd be pleased to help you.

I have mixed feelings about sat navs down here (just in case you were thinking of hiring one) as they do have a tendency to take you off the beaten track if you rely on them too much. A good map would be useful though.

Enjoy your stay ladies.
